Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Thomas Drew was a Virginia colonist.

According to '"The Register of the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, Exeter," Thomas Drewe s. [son] of Mr. Thomas Drewe [and Dorothy Wolcot] was christened the 10th day of May 1615. He was probably born a month or so before this date.[1] [2] [Exeter Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral in the city of Exeter in Devon, England.]

Thomas Drew immigrated to the Colony of Virginia prior to 1649. The earliest reference to his presence there is in the record of land granted to Bertram Obert for his transport.

Marriages & Children

The first wife of Thomas Drew is uncertain. It is known he married about 1649/50, probably in Colony of Virginia. His only child, Dorothy Drew, was born about 1649/50 in Charles City County, Colony of Virginia. On this profile, Thomas Drew's first wife is named Frances (Tooker) Drew, however there is no documentation for this name or for the date of the marriage.

Secondly, the Charles City County court orders, on the 26th of April 1664, confirms that Mr. Thomas Drew was married to the relict of William Barker. Frances and William Barker's son, John Barker, of "fflourd Hundred" entered into a bond for 30,000 lbs of tobacco with Mr. Tho. Drew, of the same plantation for maintaining Hannah "Pett" daughter of John's wife, in which he noted, to have rec'd of my father in law Mr. Tho. Drew [meaning step-father.] [4]

Death & Legacy

No will or record of the death date of Thomas Drew has been located. He is known to be deceased on 16 May 1672. There is a notation in the records of the General Court of Virginia on this date that "Theodoric Bland, decd., had been entrusted with the estate of Dorothy, orphan of Col. Drew, decd., and that Hon. Thomas Ludwell, Esq., one of the executors of Col. Drew, moved the court in behalf of the estate of the said orphan."[5]

Research Notes

The Thomas Drew, born about 1604, previously referred to on this profile is possibly the Thomas Drew who on 17 February 1634/5 was "transported to the Babadoes imbarqued in ye Hopewell Capten Tho: Wood Mr bound thither."

  • Tho: Drew .... age 26 [b c 1609][6]

Letitia (Drew) Barker is not the daughter of Thomas Drew. Thomas had only one daughter, Dorothy Drew. Letitia is being removed as daughter of Thomas Drew.
This profile and that of his father Thomas Drew have been reviewed on behalf of US Southern Colonies Project. Sources have been reviewed, inapplicable ones removed and new sources added as located. This Thomas Drew, and not his father, is the immigrant ancestor of this line of the Drew family. If anyone has additional sources to add, please do so.
