Biography

Wallerand du Bois, écuyer, seigneur de Beauffremez (à Cysoing) and Geersfontaine (location unknown), was probably born c.1590 at Lilloise Flanders, Spanish Netherlands (now France), and married c.1613 Jacqueline de Wasquehal. He is said to have died 14 Jun 1633 (source needed), and certainly before 8 Jul 1639 when his widow, Jacqueline sold Beauffremez to Antoine Dennetières.

Throughout his life he held various governmental offices at Lille.

Troublesome Details

Wallerand du Bois (c.1559–bef.1621) and Wallerand du Bois (c.1590–bef.1639) appear to have been separate people, father and son. They were both seigneurs de Beauffremez, et de Geersfontaine, but the father was knighted in 1600, so was called 'chevalier' after that date, while the son was always called 'écuyer'. This difference helps distinguish them. No death record has been found for Wallerand, the father. But on 6 May 1621, when Wallerand, the son participated in the ceremony that began the improvement of the church of St. Maurice at Lille, he was described as "écuyer, seigneur de Beaufremez"[1]. As an important civic event, if this participant had been Wallerand, the father, the record would certainly have called him 'chevalier', not 'écuyer'. And, as the participant was "seigneur de Beaufremez", Wallerand, the father must have died by this time, the estate passing to his son. Similarly, on 8 Jul 1639, when Jacqueline de Wasquehal sold Beauffremez to Antoine Dennetières, she was called, "veuve de Wallerand du Bois, écuyer, seigneur de Geffontaine"[2] (Soc. Hist. Arch. Tournai, Memoirs[3], (1905): 145). This identifies Jacqueline de Wasquehal as the widow of Wallerand, the son, not Wallerand, the father. Nevertheless, in the same record, she is also called 'tante d’alliance' of Antoine Dennetières, i.e. aunt-in-law. Wallerand, the son was a 1st cousin of Antoine Dennetières. It was Wallerand the father who was an uncle of Antoine Dennetières. There is some problem here.

Genealogical Errors

In his "Report of European Research", 13 Dec 1935, (published in Heidgerd, American Descs. of Chretien Du Bois[4]), Rev. W. Twyman Williams, Minister of College Church, Hampden-Sydney, Virginia, identified Wallerand du Bois, "seigneur de la Bourse and de Beaufremez", and his wife, Madeleine/Magdeléne de Croix, as probable parents of Chrétien du Bois, father of the New Netherland immigrants, but his correct identity has been discovered.

The idea that Chrétien du Bois, father of the New Netherland immigrants, was descended from the du Bois seigneurs de Beauffremez persists, even amongst those who have adopted some other ancestry for Chrétien than this family. The only du Bois seigneurs de Beauffremez were Antoine du Bois de Fiennes, who bought it from his brother-in-law Jean de Landas sometime after he married, Philippote de Landas (whose ancestors were the seigneurs de Beauffremez), their son Wallerand du Bois, and his son Wallerand du Bois. In 1639, Jacqueline de Wasquehal, the younger Wallerand's widow, sold Beauffremez to Antoine Dennetières. Beauffremez was only in the hands of this du Bois family from c.1555 to 1639.

While Chrétien du Bois may well have been distantly related to this family, it's chronologically impossible for him to have been descended from any of these du Bois seigneurs de Beauffremez.
