Biography

Sara was born about 1732. She passed away about 1818.

The Murphy family claims that the wife of their ancestor Simon Murphy, Jr., was Sarah Duke, based on a Murphy Bible record.:

"Mark Murphy, son of Simon Murphy ('Simon Murphy who married Sarah Duke, was the son of Richard and Mary Byrd Murphy' penciled in on a piece of paper) and Sarah Duke Murphy, b. 8 Mar 1753 in Craven County, S.C. on Padgett Creek, m. 19 Mar 1786 six miles from the city of Union to Holly Duke b. 27 Feb 1769 in N.C." [1]

Brandenberger comments in her "The Duke Family", Vol. II, P. 24, that "In 1760 Simon Murphy, Jr., sold his land in Surry County to his brother-in-law Peter Hines and was soon thereafter in Franklin County, North Carolina. He lived on Shocco and Sandy Creeks near the Warren County line. He certainly lived near enough to meet and marry a Duke girl as the Murphy family states, but the real identity of his wife Sarah has not been established. Simon Murphy and his family were in Union County, South Carolina, by 1770. A son of Simon married Holly Duke, one of the daughters of Major Duke." So, the evidence supporting the family tradition that Simon Murphy married a Sarah Duke is that Simon Murphy lived only one county over from the (multiple) Duke families of Warren County, NC.

Holly Duke Murphy's father Major Duke was the son of Joseph Duke, son of Robert Duke of Northampton County, NC, son of John Duke II and his wife Bridget of the Isle of Wight Co VA Duke family. That Robert was brother of the William Duke (Duke-389) to whom Sarah is attributed here.

In the absence of any other primary documents, it must be assumed that someone has identified William Duke (Duke-388) and his wife as likely candidates among the multiple Duke families of Warren County, NC.

It is possible that Sarah Duke Murphy's father was from the same Isle of Wight Co, VA, family in North Carolina, that produced her daughter-in-law, Holly Duke. However, the area where that family lived in NC is very near a substantial number of representatives of the James City County, VA, Duke family.

The marriage of Sarah Duke and Simon Murphy rests on a Murphy Bible record.

27 Feb 1769 in N.C." Aside from being one year off on the birth year, Duke-389 and Duke-1291 appear to be a match.

You are correct. The Sarah recorded as Duke-1291 is indeed very similar, almost certainly the same individual.
