Ethel was born in 1872^[1] in Pontefract, Yorkshire, England. In 1881 she lived with her parents, George Dunbar and Elizabeth Storey, in Marske by the Sea, Yorkshire.^[2] The family had moved to Eastrington, Yorkshire, by 1891.^[3]

At the time of the 1901 census, Ethel was a monthly nurse and boarded with the Edmond family in Saltburn by the Sea, Yorkshire.^[4]
