John was born in 1881^[1] in Marske by the Sea, Yorkshire, England, where he lived with his parents, George Dunbar and Elizabeth Storey, in 1881.^[2] The family had moved to Eastrington, Yorkshire, by 1891.^[3] George's father died in 1897 at the age of 51.^[4]

At the time of the 1901 census, George lived in Alton, Hampshire, and was an "aspirant to the order of Saint Paul"^[5] (now the Community of Alton Abbey).^[6] However, he was a poultry farmer by 1911 when he married Isabel Louise Culver in Lee, Kent.^[7][8]
