John was born in 1881[1] in Marske by the Sea, Yorkshire, England, where he lived with his parents, George Dunbar and Elizabeth Storey, in 1881.[2] The family had moved to Eastrington, Yorkshire, by 1891.[3] George's father died in 1897 at the age of 51.[4]
At the time of the 1901 census, George lived in Alton, Hampshire, and was an "aspirant to the order of Saint Paul"[5] (now the Community of Alton Abbey).[6] However, he was a poultry farmer by 1911 when he married Isabel Louise Culver in Lee, Kent.[7][8]
