Discrepancy

This profile suffers an array of issues due to a number of conflicting statements, which may never be resolved.

No original source records have been located to confirm birth, marriage or definitive relationships. Recent research availability has helped to solidify some of the mis-information; Researchers are encouraged to reverify (and add source) information; making adjustments to profiles as necessary. Parent/Spouses

Peter (Duncan) Dunkin (I) of Westmoreland Co Virginia; Parents widely presumed to be Peter and Sarah Elizabeth Stone (unsourced (Ireland vs Scotland or England) Birth Estimate 1628 Linlithgow Scotland[1] Death Estimate After Sept 9 1676 - Before 1684 Westmoreland Co [2]

  • Parent Conflict - Speculation -- Spouses may be reversed -- Most Likely Charles, John, and Henry of Copel Parish Westmoreland VA are the sons of Peter II (1642) m Eliza vs Bessie Caldwell) (or other Unknown alternate Peter (DNA) wife
  • No Son named Peter in 1685 will/settlement ; subsequent deeds refer to "Grandson Peter Duncan III" (Son of John (Duncan) Dunkin and Elizabeth (Jenkins). Peter II likely predeceased father as Son John became Heir at Law about 1685
  • Age variance at 1646 marriage would infer that Peter I was married to Bessie Caldwell (rather than the son Peter II) and died prior to 1697.[2]
  • (pre-deceased son) Peter II m Eliza (vs Elizabeth). Eliza then remarried after 1700 to Richard  Hammock(/Hammond,   b. 4 May 1674,  North Farnham Parish, Richmond County,  Virginia ; [3]
Will Settlement identifies Wife Eliza - 4 children (John; Charles; Henry; & Ann); vs Fothergill reference John, Henry, Charles, Rebecca, Matthew and Eleanor Duncan. [Ann (Dunkin) likely Cornhill, wife of Dennis Cornhill]
  • Deeds/Dates confirm these 3 as brothers and sons of Peter; [Ann (Dunkin) likely wife of Dennis Cornhill]

2023 Update - An Effort has been made to update/split individual information from the Contemporary Profiles frequently containing co-mingled data on the various "John, Henry, Charles, William's, etc., (See Individual Profiles for more up to date information).

Timeline

1628 - Birth - Linlithgow Scotland[1]

Reportedly the "Directory of Scottish Settlers in North America 1625-1825" by Dobson 1894 says: V.5: Peter Duncan, b 1624 in Edinburgh m. Bessie Caldwell in the Canongate during 1646. Father of John b 1648. Transported to Nomini Creek VA 1650. Landowner there in 1655; d. ca 1676. (Burke's Amer. Fam. w/ Br. Ancestry). It is presumed that portions of this were taken from the original Gustav Anjou Manuscript (which contained known errors regarding the Duncan Families).

Emigration Date: 1650 Place: Westmoreland County, Virginia, USA (Nomini Creek) [Note Section]

Uncertain Arrival in VA

Likely the Family members arrived in 1650; father acquired land which was passed to "son" Peter of the 1700 Will (wife Eliza).
Records for 2 Peter Dunkin (Duncan's) arriving in VA in the 1650's.

1650 -- One Peter - Accromack;
1657 -- Peter & Elizabeth Nasemond

It is unknown if others in these Families arrived at the same time; earlier or at a later date, and were not recorded. Elders may have been accompanied by their families, grown children, cousins, sisters, etc.

The Peter I who arrived in VA in 1650 - 1657 died in 1676 and the wills concern the Virginia Grant (Jul 2, 1669) to Peter Dunken for 140 acres on Floods Creek, Westmoreland Co., VA (Will Dated/Proved 9 Sept 1676)
His Son John m Elizabeth Jenkins was Executor & Administrator of the 1676 Will; - By 1714, all other children reportedly had died and John was sole surviving child - John became Heir at Law of Estate. John's Will ( June 22 1716 ) conveyed the land to his eldest son, Peter m Christian, (the Grandson of Peter I of Westmoreland; [1730-1734 Court disposition of land]

Just came across this - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Duncan-3412

This Peter Duncan of above link is not the one who married Elizabeth "Bessie" Caldwell. He was a mere child of 13. The Peter Duncan in Sandy's profile is the one who married Elizabeth.

Think this note on Duncan-3412 rather proves he is not the Duncan here:

Emigration Date: 1650 Place: Westmoreland County, Virginia, USA (Nomini Creek) [Note Section]

1697 Deed indicates Peter's property from "father Peter's Estate" likely the Family arrived in 1650, father acquired land which was passed to "son" Peter of the 1700 Will (wife Eliza). Parent Conflict - Speculation -- Spouses may be reversed -- Likely Charles, John, and Henry of Copel Parish Westmoreland VA are the sons of Peter and Sarah Elizabeth Stone vs Bessie Caldwell) (or other alternate Peter wife Eliza/Elisabeth. Deeds confirm these 3 as brothers and sons of Peter. No Son named Peter in will/settlement 1685; subsequent deeds refer to "Grandson Peter". Age variance at 1646 marriage would infer that Father Peter was married to Bessie Caldwell (rather than the son) and died prior to 1697.

Clearly, they are struggling with making it work out.

No one has done anything to this profile in two years. If you would kindly abandon it, I will happily do the work.

I would like to begin by saying that this is mother's line from her father's side. However, after many months of research on my part and feeling that I just might have it all sussed, there is Marshall. If you click down-line about three generations, you will find Marshall. I do not believe this line extends from Marshall.

Firstly, as a rule, the Scottish have a canny way of naming their children. Unless Marshall is the father of his wife's name, there would probably not be a Marshall in this line. You will note there are mainly Peter's, William's, John's...you get my drift. Of course, we do not have his wife's father's name, therefore, we can't say for certain yet. It would do no harm to learn the Scottish rules for naming. You can, afterwards, almost figure out everyone's father's names. Just don't attach them without being certain, obvs.

Marshall is a conundrum and I should have begun with him myself. It's just that I got so wrapped up into wanting to sort all that information up there in biography that I did, for the most part. One hint is - there are not two Peter's, one arriving in 1650 and the other between 1650 and 1657. It is just the same fellow. I have also found his actual birthdate, where he was born in Scotland and his marriage date with a citation. I think there is more...rather cross with myself for all that time I spent doing that whilst I should have been sorting out the Marshall problem first...but the best news is, once we get Marshall sorted - and I feel this is imperative to do first because this line just might need to be cut away from each other if they are not related - anyway, the good news is, I have a lot of information for several generations which I am happy to share with those of you whom are really the Duncans of Scotland.

I have a nagging little feeling that my Duncan line is either English or Irish. I am 56% English with only 4% Scottish [thank you, dad!] and the rest Irish, Welsh and Norwegian. I'll get back to work on Marshall now.

Here is Marshall - easier to get to this way! https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Duncan-2210

Thank you, Sandy. I will need to contact one of the four people listed as project manager and others about it as it was them that linked all of this. I think it has been a while since anyone has bothered with Marshall. I'm pretty good at finding information if and when time permits but I should and will contact these folks first. It's a worthy cause. Warm regards, Isabella
