Biography

Micajah Dunn was born in New Jersey about May 1767 per his grave stone, which listed his age as 76 years and 8 months, when he died in January of 1844. He was the son of Captain Hugh Dunn and was one of the first settlers of the Ohio River Valley near what became Hamilton County, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Micajah married to Sarah Torrence about 1799. He and Sarah first resided west of Cincinnati at Elizabethtown, where it is believed he erected a log cabin which still stands today. It is possible this was his father's home, which has been moved from it's early location to nearby Shawnee Lookout Park, but local legend has recognized this as Micajah Dunn's cabin for many years.

Micajah moved his family into Indiana Territory by 1813. They first resided in Lawrenceburg Township "near Guilford" in Dearborn County, Indiana. Eventually, Micajah purchased a farm, about 1823, in Manchester Township of Dearborn County, where he resided until his death. He was buried in the nearby Platt Cemetery. Sarah Dunn died the 1st of September in 1849. Micajah and Sarah had nine children live to adulthood.

Per F. E. Weakley's "History of Dearborn County" Micajah's son William and daughter Letitia resided in Nebraska in 1885. William inherited Micajah's land in Manchester and there raised his family. Letitia was residing with her daughter in Kansas during the census of 1880. It is possible the siblings traveled to Nebraska at the death of William's wife, in 1881, but William died in Ripley County at the home of his son Charles. His father "Cage" Dunn was listed as father on his 1904 death record in Ripley County. There is a discrepancy between his birth of Feb 1819, listed in the 1900 census, and the year 1820 listed on his death record. Informant was his son Charlie Dunn.
