Biography

Marthe Dupuis was born around 1765 in Massachusetts where her parents François Dupuis and Marguerite Prejean were deported in 1755.

After 1763, the Acadians in exile were free to settle where they wished. On 1 March 1765, James Murray, Governor of the Province of Quebec, issued a proclamation offering free land to new immigrants. Between 1765 and 1775, 1306 Acadians deported to New England immigrated to Quebec.

Her father was on a list, dated 2 June 1766 in Boston, of French Neutrals wishing to emigrate to Quebec. [1]

The family left Boston on 17 May 1767 aboard the Abigail and disembarked at the port of Quebec City on 18 June 1767. [2] The children travelling with them were:

Marguerite Dupuis 14
Paul 8
Anastasie 5
Marthe 2
Joseph 2 months

The first mention of the Dupuis family in the Quebec parish records was on 26 July 1767 at Saint-Sulpice when their children Anastasie 5 years, Marthe 2 years and Joseph 4 months were baptized at Saint-Sulpice. [2][3][4].[5][6]

They settled in the Contrecoeur region.

She married Gabriel Gareau, son of Joseph Gareau and Marie Suzanne Giard, on 10 October 1791 in Contrecoeur. [6]

Marthe passed away on 24 April 1803 and was buried on 26 April 1803 in Contrecoeur. [6]

Dupuis-851 and Dupuis-648 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same parents. Same birth year. Death dates are close. All the sources are family trees. Noted genealogist Marcel Landry has just one Marthe born to this couple in this year. He notes birth year as 1765 and the baptism in Quebec in 1767.
