David was born on the 6 November 1813 in the Market Town of Ossett, near the City of Wakefield, in West Riding of Yorkshire, England and was baptized there on 27 December 1813 at Ossett Independent Congregational. He was the son of Jonathan and Susanna Earnshaw[1]. According to family tradition he jumped ship to arrive in Western Australia but is said to have arrived on 9 September 1833 per Jane from Hobart with the 21st Regiment. He is also said to have landed at Augusta in 1829 as a soldier in the 63rd Regiment. He was of the party that met the Bussel family on their landing.
He married Mary Pomeroy on 28 July 1842 in the locality of Picton, near the Town of Bunbury, District of Wellington, in the southwest of Western Australia[2][3]. They had nine children in the next sixteen years. David was a Private in the 21st Regiment stationed at Augusta 1833 and discharged in the colony in 1840. He was appointed gaoler and Police Constable at Vasse in 1849. He owned Town Lots at Busselton and held pastoral leases in districts of Wellington, Nelson and Sussex. David was a sawyer, farmer and publican employing eighteen Ticket of Leave men on occasions 1865-1871. In Busselton he built the old Commercial Hotel, the first hotel in the town - the Vasse Hotel[4]. After his death his widow carried on the hotel licence and employed three Ticket of Leave men 1871-1878.
David died on the 25 May 1871, at the age of 59, at his home in Vasse, near the Town of Busselton, southwestern Western Australia[5]. His burial took place around the 26 May 1871 at Plot 132, in the Busselton Pioneer Cemetery, Vasse Highway, in the Town of Busselton, Western Australia. The inscription on the headstone reads:--Sacred To The Memory of DAVID FOTHERGILL EARNSHAW Who Died May 25th 181; Aged 59 Years. Also MARY His Wife Died 22nd August 1905; Aged 86 Years. Pioneers 1829-1842. Rest. Perth[6].
