Biography

Elizabeth Eccles was born about 1823, likely in Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.[1] She married Robert Inglis on 22 Sep 1843 in Paisley Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland.[2] At their marriage, Elizabeth's husband Robert was a weaver.[3]

Both the 1851 and 1861 census records for Robert and Elizabeth indicate the he was a weaver and the she worked as a bobbin winder for weaving.[4][1] This gives credence to the marriage being for the same people enumerated in the census.

Together they had six children:

  • Margaret about 1850 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland[4][1]
  • John about 1852 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland[1]
  • Elizabeth born about 1856 in Paisley, Renfewshire, Scotland[1]
  • Jean born about 1858 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland[1]
  • Robert born 8 Jan 1861 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland[5]
  • William born 15 Jun 1862 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland [6]

Sometime prior to 24 Jun 1874, the Inglis/Ingles family joined the LDS Church since that is the the date they boarded a ship in Liverpool, England with destination New York. They arrived on 6 Jul 1874. They were traveling as part of a group of members of the LDS Church (810 in all). On 7 Jul 1874 the group left Jersey City and traveled by rail to Ogden and Salt Lake City.[7]

By 1880, the Ingles were settled in Ogden, Utah where Robert resumed his trade as a weaver and Elizabeth was at home. Seventeen year old son William was still living with them at that time.[8] Elizabeth died in 1881 and is buried in in Ogden.[9]

Research Notes

Additional research is necessary to properly identify Elizabeth's parents.

Family members (and ages) who traveled to Utah:[7]

  • Robert 48
  • Elizabeth 48
  • Elizabeth 16
  • Jean 11
  • William 8

Additional information confirming that Elizabeth and family became LDS and emigrated from Scotland to Utah can be found in the records for some of her children who also went to Utah.

Death certificates for:

  • Margaret Somerville[10]
  • Elizabeth Ingles Moyes[11]
  • Mary Jane Fuller[12]

List Elizabeth Eccles and Robert Ingles as parents. Dates and places of birth match the children of this Elizabeth. Mary Jane appears to be Jean.

The 1880 census for Utah indicates that her parents were from England which supports the English parents that are currntly attached.[8]

Elizabeth and Robert weren't the only family members that converted to the Mormon faith. Her sister-in-law and children preceded her to Utah on the 30 May 1863 - 19 Jul 1863 voyage from Liverpool to New York.[13]. Sarah and children match those in William Eccles profile.
