John Henry Eckhardt was born 22 January 1898 in Frank, Saratovskaya Oblast', Russland. He was the son of Jacob Eckhardt and Anna Weiderman. John and his parents immigrated to the United States about 1899, settling in Nebraska before moving on to Greeley, Colorado.
John's family were living in Greeley in 1910. Hs father, Jacob, had established a farm. John, at age 12, would probably have been helping with farm chores. He is listed as a laborer in the census of that year and could speak English.[1]
On 12 September 1918, John registered for the draft in Greeley. He stated that he was a citizen by reason of his father's naturalization before John had reached his majority, though his own citizenship was listed as Russian. He was living on Route 4 in Greeley working as a farmer, was of medium height and build, and had blue eyes and dark hair. John had no disabilities that would preclude service in the military. World War I ended before John could serve.[2]
John has not been found in the 1920 census, but on 28 December 1921, he was joined in marriage to Mollie Winters by the Rev. J. H. Ament in Greeley.[3]
John was still farming in 1930 as indicated by the census of that year. Interestingly, this census (as did the 1940 census) had john being born in Pennsylvania, not in Russia. He and Mollie had two children, Harold and Leola, ages seven and five respectively. John was renting the home and owned a radio.[4]
Census enumerator John B. Sales found the Eckhart family living on the same farm near Greeley in which they had been living in 1935. John and Mollie's son, Harold, was engaged in working on the farm having completed his high school education. while their daughter, Leola, was in her second year of high school. The census indicated that John had completed eight years of schooling, Mollie four.[5] Mollie was killed in an auto accident shortly after the census was taken on September 1940.
John died at the age of 58 on 22 Jan 1956 in Greeley, Weld County, Colorado, United States. He was buried on 25 January 1956 at Linn Grove Cemetery in Greeley where his parents were interred.[6]
