Alfred was born in 1877. He worked as an Ironmongers assistant but spent the last year of his life in the Grahamstown Asylum suffering from general paralysis of the insane. He succumbed to his condition in 1911 [1] He was buried besides his father, John Edkins at the 'Old' Grahamstown Cemetery.[2]
Many of the dates and relationships of the Edkins family who arrived in the Cape in 1820 were recorded by Amy Binfield Dixie who died in 1976. A bare outline tree was constructed by Jack Edkins (son of this Stanford). Now more resources for South Africa are available, it is possible to check them but the data is still sketchy
