Biography

Elizabeth was born in 1796 in Reading. She was the daughter of John Edkins and his wife Elizabeth She was baptised on 4 October 1796 at St Lawrence, Reading [1]

Marriage and Children

She married Samuel Waugh, probably in Hackney, London. At the time the Banns were read , both Samuel and Elizabeth were 'of this parish' [2] Nevertheless, both partners originated from Reading, Berkshire. Together they had several children, their baptismal records state that each was born in the parish of St Mary, Reading.

  1. Samuel, b 17 April 1826, baptised 18 October 1826 [3]
  2. Mary Jane born 5 August 1827, baptised 23 September, 1827 [4]
  3. William Frederick born 27 September 1828, baptised 8 February 1829 [5]
  4. Joseph born 27 July 1830, baptised 13 November 1831[6]
  5. Geo[rge] c. 1837, born Reading ( aged 4 on 1841 census, aged 12 on 1851 census see research note)
  6. James c 1841, born reading (aged 10 on 1851 Census, see research note)

In 1841, Elizabeth listed as aged 40, a dress maker was living at Middle Row (number 7), with her were Mary Waugh aged 13, Joseph Waugh aged 11, George Waugh aged 4. In the same building though listed as a separate household were Edward King aged 2 months, James Walker aged 7 months and E Webb (female) aged 30, a shoe binder. All were born in the county [7]

In 1851 Elizabeth appeared on the census, aged 50, living in Soho Street. She was born in Reading, Berkshire. She worked as a dressmaker, with her were her sons Samuel, a Blacksmith aged 24, Joseph a gas fitter, aged 20, Geo' an errand boy aged 12 and James a 'scholar', aged 10. All the children were born in Reading [8]

In 1855, Elizabeth Waugh ' widow of Reading' was the sole beneficiary of her sister Mary Byron [9]

In 1861, Elizabeth was living in White Hart Row, Reading at 61 she was still working as a dress maker. With her were sons George (22) working as a servant and James (20) working as a harness maker. [10]

By 1871 Elizabeth was living alone in an almshouse in Lambs Court, Reading. At this census her age was recorded as 74 [11]

Elizabeth died in the September quarter of 1872, aged 76 [12]

Research Notes

Husband Samuel does not appear on the 1841 census or any subsequent ones. The 1851 census records Elizabeth as a widow . There is a burial of a Samuel Waugh recorded on 3 September 1835 [13]

Son Samuel is recorded as being born on the 17th April 1826 and then baptised at the Independent Church. The Broad Street Independent Church was where Samuel senior was also baptised and where members of the Edkins family were baptised. There is on Family search an indexed record of a baptism of a Samuel, son of Samuel and Elizabeth born 27 April 1826 and baptised on 28 October 1835 at St Mary, Reading.[14] Is this a 're baptism'. It occurs just a month after the possible burial of his father.

George and James Waugh are not found on the GRO register, registered with a mother's maiden name of Edkins. Baptisms have not been found. An Augustus George was registered in the September Quarter, 1838 in Reading. A James Waugh was registered in the December quarter, 1841 in Reading. Neither has a mother's maiden name. Are these the sons of another family member? [15]
