Samuel was born on 17th April 1826. He was the son of Samuel Waugh and Elizabeth Edkins and was baptised at Broad Street Meeting House in Reading on 15 October of the same year [1]
Samuel appears to have been 'rebaptised' into the Anglican church in 1835 [2] This was just after the death of the probable death of his father, Samuel Waugh [3]
He married Mary Edwards in the Reading registration district, during the March quarter of 1856 [4]
In 1861 the couple were living at 45 Friar Street, Reading. Samuel Waugh, aged 34 was a shoeing smith, born Reading. His wife Mary aged 33 and said to have been born in Surrey (location illegible). With them were their two children, Samuel Jno aged 2 and Louisa aged 8 months. Both Children were born in Reading .In the same house but listed as separate households were three lodgers [5]
The couple were still at 45 Friar Street in 1871 and in 1881. Samuel (44) was recorded as a Blacksmith, Mary(43) was recorded as having been born in Blackwater, Hampshire. Their family had expanded and included Samuel J aged 12, Louise aged 11, and Emily aged 5. With them was living John E Beard an apprentice blacksmith and James Waugh(29) a harness maker. Staying with them as a visitor was William Edwards aged 47, a baker born in Yateley, Hampshire[6] .In 1881, Samuel was recorded as aged 54 and his wife Mary as 53. Their children had started to earn their own living. Samuel(22) had joined his father in the Blacksmiths trade, daughter Louisa(20), was working as a draper's assistant and the youngest daughter, Emily(15) was an apprentice milliner. [7]
Mary died in 1894 at the age of 66. Her death was registered in Reading [8] In 1891, Samuel Waugh, widower; aged 74, a retired farrier was boarding at 26 Anstey Road, Reading, in the home of Charles Colyer. The enumerator however has recorded his birthplace as Alton [9]
Samuel, Mary and their son Samuel J are buried together at Reading Cemetery.
The Inscription reads
Mary the beloved wife of Samuel Waugh, who fell asleep in Jesus, February 27th 1894
Also Samuel John son of the above who died April 11th 1900 aged 41 years
Samuel the beloved husband of Mary Waugh died March 18th 1909 [11]
