Biography
Anna (Englund) Rajala was a centenarian, living to age 103.
Annie was born 16 Mar 1902, the daughter of Nelson “Nels”. Englund and his wife Emma Smith. She died 16 Jan 2006 at the age of 103.
In 1910, Annie (8) was attending school and living in Maple Ridge, Michigan with her parents. Her father, Nels (49) was employed at a lumber yard. He owned their mortgage-free farm. Her mother, Emma (35), took care of the home and family. May (3) and Willie (1) stayed home with their mom. The census worker noted that Emma gave birth to seven children, and six were still living in 1910. Hubert (12), Earl (10) and Carrie (6) were attending school. Annie's Uncle John Smith (23) was also living with them. He was born in Sweden and employed as a laborer, doing odd jobs. [1]
Ann was three months pregnant at the time of her mother Emma’s death during the influenza pandemic on 8 Dec 1918. At the age of 17, she was recorded as the mother of Adeline Virginia, born 3 Jun 1919 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. The father was recorded as Atle Martinnen.[2] Adeline was adopted by Harry Lee Eastman and Merle (Rowley) Eastman, who changed her name to Marie Lucille Eastman.
In 1920, Anne (18) was living in Maple Ridge, Michigan with her father, Nelson (59). Nels was born in Sweden and immigrated to the United States in 1891. He was naturalized in 1893. By 1920, he was widowed, and working as a farmer on his own mortgaged farm. Her brothers Herbert (22) and Earl (20) were both laborers at a factory. Carry (16), May (14), Willie (11), Walter (9), and Edwin (7) attended school. [3]
Anna Marie Englund, 21, married Rolphe Olson, 24, son of Sander Olson and his wife Anna Nelson, on 28 Aug 1923 in Escanaba, Delta, Michigan.[4] They had the following known child:
When the 1930 census was taken, Anna (28) was taking care of the home and family. Their family was living at 422 Ludington in Escanaba, Michigan, which they owned. It was valued at $10,000. (That's $159,910 in today's dollars.) Their household did not own a radio. Her husband Ralph (31) immigrated in 1904. He was a military veteran and served in the war. The census worker noted he was employed as an automobile mechanic. Their son Marvin (5) was attending school. Anna's sister, May L Englund (23) was working as a stenographer in an electrical shop. Anna Marie Olson was granted a divorce from Rolfe Olson on the grounds of extreme cruelty and non-support on 14 May 1940 in Washtenaw, Michigan, USA.[7]
In 1940, Ann (37), now divorced, was living at West Michigan Avenue in Saline, Michigan in a rental. Just 5 years earlier, she was living in Delta, Michigan. Ann rented this home for $20/month ($380 in today’s dollars). Ann had a college education, and was working as a Therapist at the State Hospital. In 1939, she earned $960 ($18,240 in today’s dollars) and worked 52 weeks of the year. Her fifteen-year-old son, Marvin was a freshman in high school. Also living with them was a lodger, Hilda White (27). Just 5 years earlier, she was living in Detroit, Michigan. Hilda had a high school education, and was working in the State Hospital as an attendant. In 1939, she earned $780 ($14,820 in today’s dollars) and worked 52 weeks of the year. [6]
Ana N Olsen, 41, daughter of Nels Englund and Emma Smith, married Toivo A Rajala, 31, born Rock, Michigan, son of Wester Rajala and Ella Karral, on 22 Sep 1943 in Escanaba, Delta, Michigan, USA.[8]
On 1 May 1992, Annie Englund was living in Escanaba, Michigan. [9]
She was 103 years old when she died in 2006.[10]
