Biography

Col. Rt. Hon. John Eyre of Eyrecourt (b. co. Wilts; bp. 22 Feb 1623 Whiteparish, co. Wilts. - d. 22 Apr 1685, age 62), built Eyrecourt Castle in County Galway.[1] He was the seventh son of:[2][3]

  • Giles Eyre of Brickworth, co. Wilts.
  • and Jane, dau. of Ambrose Snelgrove.

John and his younger brother Edward, accompanied Gen. Ludlow to Ireland,[4] where he acquired large estates in counties Galway, Tipperary, Clare and King's County. In 1662 he was granted the Manor of Eyrecourt with powers to empark.

Marriage

He married Mary,[5] daughter of Phillip Bigoe, who was High Sheriff of King's County in 1662.[4]

Occupation

  • invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.).
  • MP for Galway.
  • High Sheriff of co. Galway in 1681.

Will

Will of Col. John Eyre of Eyrecourt Castle, dated 13 March 1685, proved 8 June 1685.[4]

Death

John's funeral certificate is dated 22 April 1685.[2] He was survived by his wife, who remarried to Col. Seymour of Ballyknocken Castle in King's county.

Eyre-438 and Eyre-463 appear to represent the same person because: Both are Col. John Eyre (d. 1685) of Eyre Court Castle, co. Galway.
