Biography

Sibyl de Falaise married Baldwin (Aubigny) d'Aubignys. Sibyl had two sons Stephen and Baldwin. She was also the mother of two daughters Maud (Aubigny) FitzUrse and Hillaria. Sibyl was an Anglo-Norman noblewoman and kinswoman of King Henry I (Normandie) of England. She was called "nepta" [1]

Baldwyn de Bulers or de Bollers, was the recipient of Royal favours, apparently as a reward for marked personal attachment to King Henry I. [2]

  • It is certain, that on the fall of Robert de Belesme, in 1102, King Henry I, having the chatellany of Montgomery as an escheat, augmented it largely with distant estates, and granted it to Baldwyn de Boulers in marriage with Sibil de Falaise, his niece. [3]

Unproven Parentage

The term "niece" was sometimes used to mean that the person was an illegitimate child rather than a niece, so it is possible that she was really Henry's bastard daughter. The historian Frank Barlow also implies that she could have been Henry's daughter rather than his niece. Kathleen Thompson states that Sibyl was probably the daughter of Henry's elder brother Robert Curthose, Duke of Normandy.[4] Katharine Keats-Rohan suggests that Sibyl was the daughter of William de Falaise and Geva de Burcy and that Sibyl was just a "kinswoman" of Henry's. I. J. Sanders does not believe Sibyl was William's daughter.

Sybil was likely the daughter of William/Guillaume as he and his wife held Worsping Manor in Somerset where Sybil's daughter Maud died. As such she was kinswoman to Henry I (her father would have been Henry's 2nd cousin) and not the daughter of Robert Curthose whose son was raised at Falaise, Normandy which would make her a royal niece. Probably not. Robert challenged his brother for the crown being defeated in 1106 and held at Cardiff Castle, Wales for the rest of his life (d.1134). The interesting co-incidence was Cardiff is across the bay from Worspring, it's a short boat ride to visit the castle. Also I cannot find Ketelby-Bellars. Derbyshire (there's a Kirby-Bellars, Leicestershire but that seems to have been named after the Bellars family in the 1300's. There is some suggestion her husband was a Bellars) . Her birthplace needs a citation.
