Arthur was born in 1815, in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England. He was the son of proud Scot Admiral Sir Arthur Farquhar KCH CB and Jane Murray.
He joined the Royal Navy in 1829 and was promoted to Captain in 1849. He commanded HMS Albatross, HMS Malacca, HMS Victory, HMS Hannibal, HMS Hogue and HMS Lion. In the course of his career he served as Commander in Chief, Pacific Station and Commander in Chief, Plymouth. He was also made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath.
In 1851 he married Ellen Rickman.[1] They had 9 sons and 4 daughters:

The census for that year shows him in Steyning, Sussex.[2]
Arthur retired from the Navy in 1880.
In 1881 they were living in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire with three of their younger children.[3]
In 1891 they were still in Aboyne with some St John grandchildren.[4]
Ellen passed away in 1898.
In 1901 Arthur was still in Aboyne with unmarried daughter Jane, 41 and lots of servants.[5]
Arthur passed away in 1908 at Aboyne in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[6] His two eldest sons were his first named beneficiaries.[7] He is buried at Kincardine O'Neil Episcopal Churchyard in Kincardineshire.
Some dispute over place of birth. WIkipedia is silent. FindAGrave says Hatfield, Welwyn Hatfield District, Hertfordshire, England. Familysearch says Fetteresso, Kincardineshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, which does sound more convincing given his ancestry. But I have to defer to his census records, declaring he was born in England, and delete the Scots saltire from his profile.
Middle name Murray, FindAGrave is the only source that uses it, and while it is common for a child's middle name to be their mother's maiden name, I don't want to repeat it when I haven't seen it on any other sources.
