Biography

Julia arrived in Australia aged 3 in 1839 from Kerry Ireland, aboard the "Susan" with Mother Mary aged 39, and brothers John aged 10 and Patrick aged 6. Julia's father John was not with them.

The above lamented lady, relict of the late Mr. John Grant, laird of the Belubula Estate, who breathed her last on Tuesday, 12th inst., at Nurse Callan's private hospital, Canowindra, after an illness extending over about five weeks, at the advanced age of 82 years, could claim to be one of the oldest, if not the oldest, living resident of the Lachlan district, her association with it having reached over 65 years. Despite the weight of years the venerable lady retained all her faculties, with the exception of hearing, to the end. Her keen business instincts and thrift enabled her to be a tower of strength to her late husband in early life, and she undoubtedly proved an important factor in building up the wealth he subsequently amassed. The subject of our notice was born in the County Kerry, Ireland, and came to New South Wales with her parents, Mr. and Mrs John Finn. Her father, having shortly after his arrival in this country embarked in commercial pursuits at Hartley, the departed lady resided in that district until she was seventeen, when she wedded Mr. Grant. A brief period of her early married life having been passed at Merriganowry, in this district, she eventually accompanied her husband to Belubula Station, where she subsequently resided almost continuously until the infirmities of age crept upon her, and then her home was divided between Prospect Villa, Belubula, and Lowther Park, Hartley, the latter place being resorted to during the summer months owing to the mildness of the climate at that season of the year in that locality. Mr. John Grant, of Grantville, Lachlan River, who was drowned in that stream while it was in flood a few years back, was the eldest son of the "departed lady, ' Eugene, another son having met a similar fate in Back Creek while on a visit to his grandmother, Mrs John Grant, senr., at Merriganowry. The surviving members of the family are Thomas, George, Allah, and Joseph, of Canowindra and district, Mesdames Robinson, Mylecharane, and Cecil Coghlan, of Sydney, while the grandchildren number 51, and the great grandchildren 29. Mr. Eugene Robinson, Cowra, is one of the grandchildren. In addition there are hosts of relatives throughout the Cowra and Canowindra districts. The remains of our very old and much esteemed friend were laid to rest in the private family cemetery on the Belubula Estate on Wednesday, the funeral being one of the largest yet seen in the district. The last sad rites at the grave were performed by the Very Rev. Fathers O'Kennedy and Doran.
