Orange people will regret to hear of the deathly drowning of Mr. John Grant, of "Grantville," near Canowindra. It appears that Mr. Grant left his home for Canowindra on Saturday and was returning late in the afternoon, he having been seen on the road. His non-return did not give rise to any anxiety on the part of his people, as it was thought he refrained from coming home owing to the wet nature of the day. Next morning the presence of his horse and sulky on the Canowindra side of the river from his home caused the alarm to be raised, it being Mr. Grant's practice to leave the horse and vehicle there and row across the stream in a boat when it was in a flooded state. A search was at once made, and the absence of the boat and a saturated overcoat belonging to the deceased, found on the bank of the river, placed it beyond doubt that something untoward had happened. One of the oars of the boat was later on discovered, and yesterday an upturned boat was seen in the river near Goolagong, but it was not recovered. The body of the deceased has not so far been sighted, but a strict watch is being kept for it along the river. Mr. Grant was about 62 years of age, and was a noted horse breeder, farmer and grazier. He leaves a wife and family. The sad occurrence has called forth the widest expressions of regret and sympathy for the bereaved relatives.
