Biography

Horace Lester Fish, born 30 Oct 1840, was the eleventh child of Bersheba Packer (1796-), the second wife of Samuel Fish (1788-1883).

He married Jan. 21, 1864, Emeline Thomas [1],[2] of Heath, Massachusetts, who died May 24, 1864 [3].

After the death of his first wife, Horace married 28 July 1872 at Colrain, Massachusetts, Rogelia Jane "Jennie" Nichols. They had three known children:

The 1880 census record traces this family at Shelburne, Massachusetts [4].

Horace Lester Fish was living at the old soldier's home at Bennington, Vermont, at the time of his death, of arteriosclerosis, 25 Feb 1923. His grave is in Bell Cemetery, Halifax, Windham County, Vermont, USA [5].

Note: Headstone gives 25th as day of death--Vermont death record gives 26th.

Obituary

Bennington Banner Monday, February 26, 1923 HARRIS L. FISH Civil War Veteran Died at Soldiers' Home Today Harris L. Fish [HORACE L. FISH], a civil war veteran, died at the soldiers' home this morning at the age of 83 years. He was a member of Company K, 9th Vermont Infantry. The deceased was a native of Vermont, being born in Halifax, Oct. 30, 1840. He enlisted September 12, 1864, being in active service until the time of his discharge on the 13th of June, 1865. He has been at the home for the past ten years, the last part of the period has been spent mostly in his room due to the frail condition of his health. He was especially fond of wild flowers and of poetry. When able he often went into the field to gather his favorite blossoms which he kept in his room at all times. He was able to recite from memory many poems and to give quotations from many others. The deceased is survived by one son, Arthur L. Fish of Colrain, Mass. The funeral will be held from the home Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. John L. Cole will officiate. The body will be placed in the vault at Park Lawn Cemetery.
