Biography

Martha Emretta Flack was born on March 18, 1858 in Marshall County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Samuel Flack and Rebecca Eicher. For most of her life she was simply known as "Sis."

Martha was married on April 8, 1877, in Jefferson, Greene County, Iowa to William Henry Andrew, the son of George and Coline Hatter Andrew.[1]

She died on her 85th birthday on March 18, 1943 at the home of her daughter in Paton, and was buried three days later in the Highland Township Cemetery in Churdan, Iowa.

An obituary was published on March 23, 1943 in the Jefferson Bee:

Mrs. Wm. H. Andrew Burial

Mrs. Wm. H. Andrew, who died March 18, 1943, at the age of exactly 85 years, was buried in Highland township cemetery of Greene county, Sunday, March 21, following funeral services at 2 p.m. at the Churdan Presbyterian church.

The Rev. William Krueger, pastor of the Baptist church of Churdan, officiated at the services. A quartet made up of Mrs. Waite Teading, Mrs. Ida Blazer, Mrs. Niles Wittforth and Mrs. Alta Flack, accompanied by Mrs. Helen March, sang "In the Sweet By and Bye" and "City Four Square."

Pallbearers were L. Gardner, Merle Outtrim, Roy Flack, Glen Andrew, Verne Taylor and Byron Flack. Mrs. Andrew died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A.B. Gardner, of Paton.

Born March 18, 1858 in Cedar county, her maiden name was Martha Emretta Flack. She was the daughter of Samuel and Rebecca Flack and with her parents came to Greene county in the year 1871. She was united in marriage to William H. Andrew April 8, 1877. To this union were born seven children, four bous and three girls; Marshall H.; Maurie E. of Jefferson, Wilda McGee, who died Nov. 10, 1915; Mahlon T., who died in infancy; Merton A. of Ogden, Pearle Gardner of Patron and Mattie Outtrim of Jefferson.

Mr. and Mrs. Andrew made their home on a farm in Highland township near Churdan until the death of Mr. Andrew which occurred May 28, 1915, after which she moved to Churdan. In 1938 she moved to the home of her daughter at Paton.

She was baptized in and uinited with the Baptist church in Churdan in the year 1916.

She was the last of a family of 13 children, eight boys and four girls: Salathiel, John, Thomas, Robert, Samuel, Alfred, George, Lydia, Susan and an infant girl who did not live.

She was a kind wife and loving mother whose family was her first interest in life. She was always a good neighbor and will be greatly misseed by her family and friends. She is survived by five children, 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.[2]

1860 - United States Federal Census - In 1860, Samuel, 40, and Rebecca Flack, were located in Greenfield, Jones County, Iowa, with their family. That family consisted of Salathiel, 10; John E., 8; Robert V., 5; Samuel M., 4; Martha E., 3; Lidia M., 1.[3]

1870 - United States Federal Census - In 1870, the Flack family is in Cass Township, Cedar County, Iowa and is listed as Flax. It consists of Samuel, 50; his wife, Rebecca, 43; Salathiel, 20; John E., 18; Robert N., 16; Samuel N., 13; Martha, 12; Alfred R., 9 and Susan, 8.[4]

April 8, 1877 - Marriage - Married to William Henry Andrew in Jefferson, Greene County, Iowa.

1880 - United States Federal Census - In the 1880 census, William Andrew, 26, and his wife Marha, 21, are farming in Bristol Township, Greene county, Iowa. Living with them is their one-year-old son, Marshal. Also in the household (but dropped from the Ancestry index) are 15-year-old Claton Andrew and 23-year-old Charles Ward, both listed as laborers. Claton (should be Clayton) is William's younger brother.[5]

1900 - United States Federal Census - In the 1900 United States federal census, William Andrew, 46, is farming in Highland Township, Greene county, Iowa. Living with him is his wife, Marthy, 42, and children, Marshal, 21; Moris, 19, Wildia, 17; Merton, 15; Pearl, 7 and Mattie, 5.[6]

1910 - United States Federal Census -In the 1910 federal census, William Henry Andrew, 56, is living with his wife, Martha E., 52, in Highland Township, Greene county, Iowa. Living with them are their children, Marshall H., 30; Maurice E., 28; Merton A., 24; Pearl E., 17; and Mattie M., 15. William Henry is listed as a farmer while the boys are listed as laborers.[7]

March 18, 1943 - Death - Paton, Greene County, Iowa.
