    CORONER'S INQUEST.
Mr. G. C. Martin, J. P., held an inquiry at Turner's Hotel, Waratah, on Wednesday, on the body of an old man named Samuel Fordham, who fell down dead the same morning. A jury having been sworn and the body viewed.
Dr. Joseph Stapleton stated that on that morning he was called to the quarry by a quarryman, who told him that a man had been taken ill at the quarry. Witness went at once to Dawson-street, Waratah, and saw the body of a man lying there. He examined him externally and used the stethescope, and found that life was extinct. He seemed a well-nourished man of about 60 years of age. Witness had not attended him previously, and could not give any opinion as to the cause of death. Witness made inquiries, and heard that in the morning he had been working, and during this work fell down apparently dead. Witness did not remove any of deceased's clothes, but he had no marks of violence about his face, which was placid.
Alfred Bull, a quarryman, living at Waratah, said the deceased was his father-in-law and lived next door to witness. He saw the deceased the previous night and was talking to him, when he then appeared in his usual state of health. Witness saw him again the morning of his death about 8 o'clock. He had had a cold, and witness's wife asked him how the cold was, and he replied that he had had a fit of coughing that morning. He then had his breakfast and went away to draw a load of coal. Afterwards, when witness went to work he saw the deceased with his cart going to work, and about an hour afterwards he was told that he was dead.
By the Coroner : Witness was not aware that deceased had had any illness or medical advice lately. He had not complained of any illness beyond a cold. He had no money troubles or any other troubles. He lived on the best terms with his wife and family.
John Howell stated that he engaged the deceased to draw a load of coal for him that morning. Deceased went to the pit about 8 o' clock with his horse and cart, and loaded the cart with coal and came to ask witness to lend him his leading horse. Witness told him to take the horse and send him back. Deceased turned away to get the horse, and witness also turned to his work, and a second or so after, when witness. looked again, he saw deceased lying in the mud on his hands and knees. Witness jumped down from the stage on which he was working and picked the old man up, and held him until assistance came. A doctor was sent for, and meanwhile the deceased was taken home. He groaned once or twice after witness picked him up, and witness thought it was only a fit.
By the Coroner: Deceased looked the same that morning as he usually did, and witness had known him for 10 years. Deceased was quite away from the horses, and nobody was near him when he fell.
Joseph Ellis gave corroborative evidence, and the jury, after a short consultation, returned a verdict of death from purely natural causes.

    Waratah.
The funeral of the late Mr. Samuel Fordham took place on Thursday afternoon in the North Waratah Cemetery, and was largely attended by the members of the Sons of Temperance and residents of the town. The late Mr. Fordham had resided amongst us for the past 18 years, during which time he was ever looked upon as a sterling upright citizen, and held in general respect. The sympathy felt for those bereaved is earnest, and his kindly old face will be missed for some time.

I believe these 2 Samuel Fordham's are one and the same. Hence, requesting to merge them together - as my Rhoda Fordham (now Hunter) is the sister of your Mary Anne Fordham (noe Garner).
