William Foster (or Forster) was christened on 11 Nov 1827 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. He was the son of William and Ellen Foster. His father's occupation was recorded as collier, and the family's address as Hardshaw.
By June 6th 1841, they were living in Eccleston, Lancashire. William was employed as a coal miner, as were the two eldest sons, John and William junior. A couple named Joseph and Mary Doud were living in the same house; Joseph was a tailor.
By March 30th 1851, they were still in Eccleston; William and his father were both still coal miners.
