John Ulysses Frankenbery

Biography

From A Frankenbery Family History, by Carole A. Staton Linderoth, pp 28,30:

John Ulysses Frankenbery was born 02 July 1847 to Samuel Lewis and Eliza McVetie Frankenbery in Dublin Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. Samuel L. moved with his family about 1850 to Illinois and settled in McDonough County. There John U. spent his boyhood and youth. He was brought up on a farm near Bushnell, Illinois.

January 5, 1864 at the age of 17 years, 6 months, John volunteered for service in the Civil War. He was a private in Company H, 119th Illinois infantry corps, under Captain Samuel McConnell, commanded by Col. Kinney. He served until his discharge 26 August 1865, at Mobile, Alabama.

His Regiment was assigned to the 16th Army Corps. He marched with Sherman's army to Meridian, Mississippi, then in the Red River expedition movement against Memphis, Tennessee; campaigned into Missouri after Price, fought at the siege of Mobile, Alabama and was present at the fall of Fort Blakesley. He suffered shell shock at Fort Blakesley, Alabama, and sunstroke at Yellow Bayou, Louisiana in 1865, which caused him in later years to be treated for mental relapses. He was described at enlistment as 5 foot, 4 inches tall, light complexion, gray eyes, light hair, and listed "farmer" for his occupation.

In the spring of 1867, he settled in Cedar Township, Wilson County, Kansas, taking as a claim a quarter of Section 19, Township 10, Range 29. At this time, the people settled along the Verdigris River from Coyville to old Verdi. He was a single man and improved his farm year by year, until his marriage 3 years later.

On 24 April 1970, John married Huldah Streets. Huldah was the second daughter of Calvin and Susan (Sloper) Streets, who homesteaded 160 acres in 1869, joining John U.‟s farm on the West. Her family came from Jackson County, Iowa. Huldah was born 19 July 1852 at Iron Hill, Iowa

To this union were born 8 children, 6 of whom grew to adulthood; Fred, Will, Frank, Lola, Irene and Ben.Samuel Calvin and Allie May died very young; oneunder two years and the other about eight months.

p 38:

As mentioned, John suffered from relapses from his illness during the Civil War, and was, as a result, hospitalized at the state Hospital at Osawatomie, Kansas, from about 1910 until his death. At times, he was able to come home for a few days to visit. As his illness progressed, Huldah lived much of the time with their daughter, Lola. Her granddaughter, Cleone, remembers that when she came to visit with their family, it was wintertime, and “Grandma” would sit in the rocking chair in front of the wood stove. When she went out of the room to do something, they would move her chair around to the side, so she could get more heat. But, when she came back, she would move the chair right back to its former position in front of the stove.

Huldah passed away 31 July 1917. Her funeral was held at the Hatler Schoolhouse and burial was in the Hatler Cemetery.

John U. died 02 September 1917 (only a little over a months after Huldah‟s death). The funeral was held at the old home with burial in the Hatler Cemetery.

Apparently they stayed near the family of Hulda (Streets) sister, Abbie Susan (Streets) Schooler, who is on the same Census with husband, John Alexander Schooler, and children. A June Frankenbery has been added to some family trees on Ancestry because, I believe, of the mistaken transliteration in this document of the name "Irene" as "June" (it does look like that at first glance). From the information in his obituary, John U must have been admitted to the state hospital at Osawatomie for treatment for mental lapse soon afterwards. Irene was married later that same year in October.; FamilySearch image; image on WikiTree
