Mary Lucinda Freeman was born in 1868 at Hakahaka Bay, Marlborough, New Zealand.[1] She was the daughter of Richard David Freeman and Ani Davis and the Grandaughter of an American Whaler John Davis and his wife Kurupa Davis nee Okura, a full-blooded Moriori.
She was the eldest of Ani's children and had a half-brother, Bill Davis. There is mention of other siblings, although they are yet to be confirmed.
Mary Lucinda, married Frederick William Eyles in 1908.It is interesting to note that her Marriage entry was recorded as Mary Lucy, as opposed to her registered birth name, Mary Lucinda. Perhaps that was her personal preference.[2]
Mary and Frederick had three children, Mary, Joseph and Ruby. Mary appears to have spent most if not all of her life in the Marlborough District.
She passed away on 8 July 1946, aged 78 years.[3] Her death was registered as Mary Lucy. She was buried at the Omaka Cemetery in Blenheim. Her husband Frederick died in 1957 and was buried with her in a joint plot. Her mother Ani was interred at the same cemetery.[4]Her headstone, pictured below, is in the name of Mary Lucy Eyles.
Headstone also under Mary Lucy. |
