Biography

John was baptised 26 July 1818. He is the son of Thomas Freestone and Mary Ann ( Knight ) Freestone.

RESEARCH BY Nancy Ford.

I believe John married Mary Ann Goter on the 7th December 1845 at St Andrews the Great at Cambridge. John is noted as a bachelor of full age, his occupation a Policeman. His father is listed as Thomas, his occupation a Smith. Mary Ann noted as a spinster and a minor. Her father is listed as George Goter, his occupation a Coachman. John and Mary Ann’s residence at the time of the marriage was Miller’s Lane. No Places of birth were listed. William & Sarah Gravestocks were witnesses.

This John Freestone seems to fit as his fathers occupation is a Smith. Thomas Freestone was a Master Blacksmith in the 1851 Census of Toft. Most of the other John Freestones I researched around the right age had fathers named John Freestone. This may require more research to confirm he is the right one.

However in the 1851 Census of Cambridge Mary Ann Freestone age 24, daughter, is now a widow, living with her mother Ann Goler ( Goter ) age 53, also a widow at Sidney St Cambridge. Both of them are Bedmakers. Both born at Wilbarston, Northamptonshire. I believe John passed away in 1848, the only record I have been able to find is from the Civil Registration Death Index, 1837-1915.

The 1861 Census states Mary Ann Freestone, age 34, daughter, widowed, living in Sparrow Lane, Cambridge with her mother Ann Goley ( Goter ) age 63, widowed . Born Wilbarston(e). Northamptonshire. Both are college servants.

The 1871 Census states Mary Ann Freestone daughter, age 44, born Wilbarston and Ann Goter, Head, Mother age 73. Born Wilbarston, Northampton.

The 1881 Census states Marianne ( Mary Ann ) Freestone, Head, age 54, College Servant. Born Wilbarston Northamptonshire. Ann Gator, Mother age 83, former Servant. Born Wilbarston Northamptonshire. Their residence Guildhall Place.

John passed away before 1851. Mary Ann had not remarried before the 1881 Census. It seems Mary Ann Freestone and her mother Ann spent many years as widows.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
