Biography

Matilda was born on 21 Aug 1825 / 11 May 1824 in Ottenstein, Braunschweig. She was the daughter of Kantor Johann Conrad Julius FRICKE and his wife Wilhelmine AHLERS.^[1][2][3]

Ludwig and Matilda are recorded in the 1880 census (Volkszählung) for Minden as living in Fischerstadt No. 10. His occupation is given as 'Steueraufseher a.D.' (tax inspector, ret'd)^[4]

Mathilde died on 3 July 1884 at her home in Minden, Königswallstraße 41. Her death was witnessed and formally reported by Buchhalter Carl Kamlah on 4 July 1884.^[5]

Research Notes

Mathilda's surname

Throughout his autobiography, Julius Lohmeyer refers to his mother's maiden name as FRICKER, when in fact it was FRICKE. This may be a mis-recollection or perhaps an transcription error. The autobiography was written in German and then translated by his children before being edited by the publisher, so it is quite likely that a number of German names have been transliterated incorrectly.

Mathilda's birthday

In the 1880 Minden census, Mathilda's birthday and place are recorded clearly as 21 Aug 1825 in Ottenstein, Braunschweig. In her son's autobiography and family tradition asserts that her birthday was 11 May 1824. One or other must be in error.
