Notes

Note NI03002The family of John Gardner is not included in the Gardner Genealogy of Somerset County by Ivan Orlo Gardner. From our limited research, the family of John and his wife, Elizabeth, seemed to depart from the rest of the family early on. Some descendants of this part of the family are buried in the Methodist Cemetery in Boswell, Somerset County and, from other information, at least one branch of the family became Dunkards. Of course, location may have played the larger role separating the two branches. Families were very large at that time and just the work involved in raising and providing for ones own family took up most of the parents time.

We found no petition for John regarding release of guardianship at the courthouse. It appears that John married in 1803 to an Elizabeth. We do know that they lived in Jenner Township, Somerset County. We have not located their burial place, although many of the children are buried in the Hopewell Methodist Cemetery in Boswell. We will assume that both John and wife, Elizabeth, are buried in the same cemetery, but the stone marking their grave is long gone. John Gardner's will can be found at the courthouse (1839-Will #10).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
