Ira was born about 1836 to parents John A. and Elizabeth (Hall) Gardner.
He married Julia A. Marshall in 1857.
During the U.S. Civil War, Ira joined the Confederate Army, enlisting in September 1861 and serving in the 56th Virginia Infantry.
Death Died of wounds at Chaffin's Farm, Virginia.
