PAINFUL CASE. Station Manager in Trouble.[2]
An elderly man named George Australia Garling, pleaded guilty at the Sessions yesterday to the larceny of three watches and four chains, the property of Henry R. Ward, on October 6.
The circumstances were painful. Garling was employed by Ward, and pawned the jewellery for the sake of getting money for his family, of whom there are 11, three being young children. Garling had never been before the court before. Lately he had been in ill-health, and was laid up for four months, two operations being performed upon him at the Manly Hospital. He promised to make restitution. He had been a station manager and overseer In New South Wales and New Zealand. He had lost a considerable sum of money In New Zealand, and had never recovered from the blow.
His Honor said he would dispense with sureties, and liberated Garling as a first offender. Garling said his sons would pay the money.
Imposing on Mark Foy's[3]
A grey-bearded man named George Australia Garling, or L. F. Garling, aged 60, describing himself as a station manager, was before Mr. King, D.S.M., at the Central Court yesterday, morning, on a charge of obtaining from Mark Foy's one pair of blankets, value 12s 6d, and £2 7s 6d in money by means of a valueless cheque, on June 23 last. He pleaded guilty, and elected to be summarily dealt with. The police handed in a list of five convictions for similar offences, going back to 1894. His last sentence was four months.
The accused pleaded for the imposition of a fine, but the magistrate remarked that If he had known his previous record he would not have permitted accused to elect summary treatment, but would have sent him up for trial, where he would got a heavier sentence than the magistrate could give him. Accused was sentenced to six months' hard labour.
