Thomas William Garrett was born on 26 July 1858 In Wollongong, New South Wales.[1]. According to the New South Wales Birth Index he is the son of Thomas (sen.) and Mary Ann Garrett. According to the article about him in the Australian Dictionary of Biography, he is the son of Thomas (sen.) and Mary Ann (nee Creagan) Garrett[2].
He was a first class cricketer and according to espncricinfo he was a very fine hard-wicket bowler, a capital field, and a punishing if not dependable batsman. ... His first experience of meeting the full strength of England was in the historic 1882 encounter at the Oval where Australia won by seven runs, but his share in The Ashes triumph was small - 12 runs for once out and one wicket for 32 runs.[3].
He was educated at Newington College, Sydney and Sydney University where he was a champion sprinter. He became a solicitor and worked for the Public Trustee in Sydney.[3]
He married Helen Alice Maude Applewhaite in 1879[4], at St. James Church, Sydney[5][6][2], date of marriage 25 Mar 1879.
He died in 1943[7][8]. The death notice only mentions his wife.
His obituary in the Sydney Morning Herald, mentions four sons and three daughters[9].
His body was cremated at Northern Cemeteries, North Ryde, on 7 Aug 1943[10], following a funeral held at the St. James Church, Turramurra.
