Biography

Paul Garrison was born about 1720. He died about 1800 in Rowan County, North Carolina.

Another son is Stephen Garrison (1757 - 1841).

"From November, 1746, to March, 1770, a Paul Garrison appears in records as having lived in Southwestern Virginia and as having acquired and disposed of land on the Catawba River."[1]

He is mentioned on page 115 of this doctorial dissertation, "Southern routes: Family migration and the eighteenth-century southern backcountry", by Dr. Creston Long, who is a professor in the History department at Salisbury University.[2]

  • 19 Nov. 1746: Paul is listed as one of the workers working on creating the Catwaba/North Fork Road.[3]
  • 29th May 1760: Paul Garrison was patented 68 acres on the waters of Catawbo at a place called the knob; jointly with John Donilly's 69 acres of land at the corner of Paul's new land.[4]
  • 8th March, 1763: Paul Garrison, of Roan County, North Carolina, to John Donilly, £20, 68 acres, said Garrison's part of 137 acres patented to John Donelly, Sr., and Paul Garrison, 29th May, 1760, on waters of Catawbo at a place called the Knob; corner land of John Donilly, Sr.[5]
  • 24 Sept. 1772: Patented 137 acres with son Thomas Garrison in Catawba Creek to William Preston, in Augusta County, Virginia, as an heir of John Donnally via his deceased wife Margaret Donnally; shortly travels back to Rowan County, North Carolina[6][7]

This Indenture made the twenty fourth Day of September in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Two, between Paul Garrison Tenant by the Courtesy of one Sixth part of One Hundred and Thirty Seven acres of Land hereafter to be mentioned whereof the said Paul and Margaret his late wife (now dec'd) who was one of the Daughters of John Donilly the Elder dec'd & one of the Sisters of John Donilly the Younger also dec'd and one of the coheirs of the said John Donilly the Elder and John Donilly) the Younger were seised (?); Thomas Garrison Son and Heir of the said Margaret, John Clarke and Lydia his wife, (which said Lydia is another Daughter of the said John Donilly the Elder and Sister of the Said John Donilly the Younger and another of the Coheirs of the said John Donilly the Elder & the S John the Younger), and Elizabeth Steelman (another Daughter of the said John Donilly the Elder and Sister of the said John Donilly the Younger , and a coheir of both the said C…(?) mentioned decedants), of the one part and William Preston of the County of Botetourt in the Colony of Virginia of the other part. Whereas by one patent under the Seal of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia covering(?) Date the twenty ninth day of May in the year of our Lord One Thous: seven hundred and Sixty there was granted to the said John Donilly the Elder and Paul Garrison the afore mentioned Tract of Land containing One hundred and thirty seven acres Lying then in the County of Augusta now Botetourt on the waters of Catawbo Creek; and the said parcel being by virtue thereof seized (?) And possessed (?) Of one Moiety of the said Tract of Land did by his Indentures of Leave (?) and Reference? Dated some time about the month of March One thousand seven hundered and Sixty three convey the said Moiety to the said John Donilly Junr soon after which the said John Donilly Junr and John Donilly the Elder both Died Intestate without having made Disposition of the said land in their Life time whereby the said Land Descended to the afore named Margaret who had intermarried with the aforesaid Paul and had Issue by him the aforesaid Thomas Garrison , Lydia who intermarried with the aforesaid John Clarke, Elizabeth who intermarried with John Thomas(?) Steeman Deceased, Keturah who had intermarried with William Grant, mary who intermarried with John Bryans, Priscilla who intermarried with John Jones, and Catherine (who since died intestate without Issue by which her Moiety of the S Land descended to her surviving Sisters and the said Thomas Garrison) and Daughters and coheirs of the said John Donilly the Elder and Sisters and Coheirs of the said John Donilly the Younger. But as no petitions have yet been made amongst the Sisters. And the said Paul Garrison and Thomas Garrison, John Clarke and Lydia his wife and Elizabeth Steelman been desirous of selling their respective Titles to the said Land. Now this Indenture witneseth that for and in consideration of the sum of Twenty pounds, current money of Virginia to them in hand paid by the said William Preston the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged . They the said Paul Garrison, Thomas Garrison, John Clarke and Lydia his wife and Elizabeth Steeman and each for himself and herself hath Granted Bargained and Sold and by these presents Do and each of them doth Grant Bargain and sell to the said William Preston and his Heirs Three undivided sixth(?) parcels(?) of the aforesaid one hundred and Thirty seven acres of Land To have Hold occupy and Enjoy the said Land with the appurtenances Hereunto belonging to him the said William Preston and his Heirs and Assigns for ever And the said Paul Garrison, Thomas Garrison, John Clarke and Lydia his wife and Elizabeth steelman, do severally and respectively for themselves, their and each of their Joint and Several Heirs Executors & Adminiustrators covenant and agree to and with the said William Preston that he the said William shall and may quietly and peaceably Have Hold and enjoy the afors: Three Sixth parts of the Land afores: unto the said William his Heirs and Assigns and that the said Paul Garrison and Thomas Garrison, John Clarke and Lydia his wife, and Elizabeth Steelman Their Heirs, Executors and Administrators shall and will covenant and for ever Defend the same to the said William Preston his Heirs and Assigns against them the said Paul Garrison, Thomas Garrison, John Clark and Lydia his wife and Elizabeth Steelman and their and each of their respective Heirs and Assigns and against all and every other person and persons whatsoever In Witnes whereof the said Paul Garrison, Thomas Garrison, John Clark and Lydia his wife and Elizabeth Steelman have hereunto set their Hands and Offered their Seals the day and year first within written .
