Biography

Gartery was the wife of Thomas Holloway. Their children are recorded in the Friends Records of the Northern Division of Bristol and Somersetshire, England, as:^[1]

• James, born 10 Aug 1680 in Froom;
• John, born 3 Aug 1686 in Froom;^[2]
• Richard, born 1 Jan 1689 in Froom;
• Gartery, born 17 May 1696 in Froom;^[3]
• Sarah, died 1695.

Her birth date and name are not known, nor are her parents. She was born before 1670, probably in England, based on birth of children. She died in 1696 or later, probably in Somersetshire, England, where she and Thomas had their children.

Research Notes

She is presently listed here, as in some online trees, as Anne Garther or Anne Gartery. There is no known record that identifies her by this name. This name is inconsistent with the records of her children where she clearly has first name Gartery - a first name that they also gave to their daughter. Some online profiles suggest she was Margaret Anne, presumably assuming Gartery was a form of Margaret. But again she does not use that name in records for herself or for her daughter, so it is currently just speculation.

She is listed here and in some online trees as born about 1644 and died about 1700 in Froom, Somersetshire. There are no records identified for these dates nor location. Birth in 1644 would be possible but unusual, given children born in the 1680s and 1690s. It may derive from the 1644 baptism for Ann Garther in Warwickshire (an Anglican record). Other trees suggest birth in 1658 in Somerset, also unsourced but more likely.
