Biography

Llewellyn Thomas Hockridge Geake was born in Devonport, Devon and baptised June 17, 1829 in the parish of Stoke Damerel, Devon, as was his sister Jemima Lydia Hockridge Geake. Their parents were listed as Thomas and Peggy Geake. At Llewellyn's baptism their father's occupation was listed as baker whereas in 1836 at Jemima's, it was listed as butcher.^[1]

He married Dinah Sarah Osborn in 1860 in Victoria, New South Wales, Australia.^[2][3]

Llewellyn died January 6, 1866 in Wentworth, New South Wales, Australia and was buried there in Wentworth Cemetery.^[4]

Research Notes

Many online trees have Llewellyn and his sister Jemima as the children of Thomas Geake (1761-1834) and Peggy Langmaid (1770-1845) who had 9 children from 1794 to 1809.

Thomas Geake and Peggy Langmaid were living in St Germans up to November 1834 when he died. At the time of Jemima's baptism in Stoke Damerel in 1836, her parents' residence was listed as St Germans (Cornwall) but elderly Thomas had died in November 1834.

it seems as though Peggy would not only have been too old at age 60-61 to begin having children again after a 20 year gap but that she would have had any new children with her in the 1841 Census, but they are NOT.

WHERE WERE JEMIMA and LLEWELLYN in the 1841 CENSUS -- in England or had they already been taken to Australia by their actual mother??

In addition to all of this, Peggy does NOT mention Jemima or Llewellyn in her Will which was probated in 1846 when they would still have been minor children. She DOES mention her living daughters, the children of her daughter Mary Webb, the daughter of her son John as well as her son William. (Her daughter Peggy Langmaid Geake Tebbutt married in 1837 in Australia and died 2 years later)^[6][7] (MacKechnie-21 18:52, 21 December 2022 (UTC))
