Biography

Isaac was a Friend (Quaker)

According to renowned genealogist, Elizabeth Pearson White, Isaac Gibbs was born in Kings County, New York on 18 Sep 1669, the son of Richard Gibbs.[1] There is not much information about Isaac to be found. We know that he married Hannah Dickinson in 1696 in Oyster Bay, Nassau, New York.[2] Although there is some discrepancy with regard to when in 1696: Clemens, in American Marriage Records gives a date of April 1696,[3] While Torry, in New England Marriages,[4] and Hinshaw, in the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy give 22 Oct 1696.[5] Their marriage was recorded by the New York (sometimes called Flushing) Monthly Meeting.[6] Hannah Dickinson was the daughter of John Dickinson and Elizabeth Howland, whose parents, John Howland and Elizabeth Tilly were Mayflower passengers.

Isaac and Hannah had the following children:

  1. Richard Gibbs; b. abt. 1697, Burlington, Burlington, NJ; d. 1737, Mansfield, Burlington, NJ;[7] m. 1721, Rebecca Cowgill, daughter of Ralph Cowgill.
  2. Francis Gibbs; b. abt. 1699; d. 1750, Mansfield;[8] m. Elizabeth
  3. Isaac Gibbs, Jr.; b. abt. 1701, Mansfield, Burlington, NJ; m. 1) Mary Shreve; 2) Susannah (Godwin) Davis.
  4. Sarah Gibbs; b. abt. 1705. Referred to as Sarah Dickinson in her father's will.
  5. John Gibbs; b. bef. 1708, Mansfield; m. 18 Oct 1729, Hannah Lucas, daughter of Robert Lucas of Burlington.[9]

Hannah appears to have died before 2 Feb 1716, when, according to White, Isaac married Hannah/Anna Pope.[1] It is unclear whether Isaac and Anna had any children.

Elizabeth White died in 2011, and her books on the Mayflower descendants are hard to come by (selling for hundreds of dollars!) and only a few libraries contain copies. There are, however, a few snippets regarding Isaac to be found online:[1]

"Isaac Gibbs married second, in Burlington County, N.J., 2 February 1716 Hannah/Anna Pope. Isaac's second wife, called "Anna" in his will probably died in Mansfield, after 27 Jun 1750, the second date on which her husband's will was ..." (p. 57).
"... 492 acres of land, housing and fixtures in the Township of Mansfield. This land was inherited by Isaac Gibbs, the only son and heir of his father, Richard Gibbs, who had purchased the land 20 May 1690, from Francis Davenport, George Hutchinson and John Woolston, as possessers in trust for Percival Tool. This deed was signed by Isaac Gibbs in the presence of ..." (p. 58).
"... was mentioned in her father's will, and before 22 June 1739, the date of her husband's second marriage.
Isaac Gibbs married second, in Mansfield, 22 June 1739 Susannah (Godwin) Davis, who has not been indentified.
Isaac's first wife, Mary, was called "Mary Gibbs" by her father, Caleb ..." (p. 92). [This is referring to Isaac Gibbs, Jr. who married first Mary Shreve, and second Susannah Davis.]
"Richard Gibbs, had convenyed to John, 5 April 1735. Their father, Isaac Gibbs, Sr., had confirmed this sale 19 April 1744. The deed was witnessed by Jonathan Curtis, Henry Delatush and Isaace DeCou. On 12 November 1753, Henry Delatush, one of the witnesses, acknowledged that he had witnessed John and Hannah Gibbs sign the indenture." (p. 95).
