Biography

James is born on January 8, 1850 in Markham Township, Canada West (Ontario), the son of Hannah Paterson (1825-1887) and John Gibson (1820-1905). Markham is the township to the north of Scarborough. Scarborough is now a part of Toronto and Markham Township is now a part of York Region. James’ mother was born in Upper Canada, the daughter of the original Scots settlers who homesteaded in Scarborough. His father was born in Scotland.

James is in the 1851 census (conducted in 1852) as a three-year old boy on his parents farm in Markham. And he is 11-years old with his family in the 1861 census. James, at 21-years old, is listed as a farmer on his parent’s farm in the 1871 census. At some point in the late 1870s, James marries Susan Glendinning (1849-1940).

James and Susan are living in Markham in the 1881 census with a two-year old child. James is a farmer. The farm, to put it in today’s terms, is less than a kilometre north of Steeles Ave, between Woodbine and Warden, in York Region. Another way of locating it in the current geography would be to say that it is about one kilometre southeast of the intersection of Highways 404 and 407. The family is in Markham on the farm in the 1891 census with two children. There was a third child but apparently he died young. The 1901 census shows James and Susan with their two children. In addition, Susan’s brother, John Glendinning, is living with them. In the 1911 census, James and Susan are living with their one daughter (“Maggie” in the census) in Lot 2, Concession 4 of Markham. (John’s father had owned 100 acres in Lot 1, Concession 4 and another 100 acres in Lot 3, Concession 5.)

James dies in 1925 and Susan lives on until 1940. They are buried together in Milliken in the St John’s 5th line church cemetery (7155 Warden Avenue).

James and Susan had the following children:

  • Margaret Gibson 1879-? + Horace Smith
  • John Gibson 1882-1955 + (1910) Mary Sommerville Harper 1882-?
  • James Gibson c1884-1885
