Biography

William Roscoe Gilbert, who went by Roscoe, son of William A. Gilbert and Lodema Alice Robinson, was born in Village Township, Van Buren County, Iowa, United States, 6 Aug 1882.^[2] He was the fifth of his parents' seven children. His four elder siblings were Albert, born in 1873,^[3] and Dora, born in 1875,^[4] Bertha, born in 1877,^[5] and Augustus, born in 1880 (and who died before Roscoe was born).^[6] His two junior siblings were Arthur, born in 1884,^[7] and Guy, born in 1888.^[8]

In 1885, Roscoe remained in Village Township with his parents and siblings, Albert, Dora, Bertha and Arthur.^[9] Roscoe's widowed maternal grandmother resided immediately next door.^[10]
