William married Una Margherita Mary Nixon in Scotland in 1894.
Belfast Newsletter, 23rd June 1894: GILBERT-NIXON: June 20, at Burntisland, by the Rev. William Nixon, D.D., of Montrose, grandfather of the bride, assisted by the Rev. George Macaulay, of Bewling, and the Rev A.W. Kinment, M.A., of Burntisland, William Gilbert, of Belfast, to Una Margherita Mary, eldest daughter of the late Rev. John Nixon, of Barrhill, Ayrshire.[1]
William and Una had two children together. Una fell ill and was sent to New Zealand to stay with relatives of her husband's, but she died there in 1901. A few years later William married again.
William Gilbert, a widower Merchant of full age, married Evelyn Helen Haig ,a spinster of full age, at Dundela in the parish of Holywood in County Down, on 3 Nov 1909 when both of Knock and with their fathers named as William John Gilbert and Jas F Haig both Merchants. [2]
