Margaret was born on the 22 September 1894 in the District of Limehouse, Stepney, London, England[1]. Her baptism took place on the 31 May 1896 with several of her siblings at the Parish Church of St. Anne's Limehouse, Three Colt Street, in Limehouse, District of Stepney, London & Middlesex, England[2]. She is the daughter of Frederick Charles Gilchrist and Leticia Frances Mary Lucy Dodd.

In 1901, Margaret (6) lived with parents Frederick (57) and Letitia (44); siblings Builder, Stirling (26), Alice (25), Letitia (23), Gwendoline (14); Electrical Engineer, Archibald (16), Gertrude (12), Amy (10), May (8) and Alfred (3), along with cousin Stanley Albert (Rudd) (37). The family lived at 135 Three Colt Street, in Limehouse, Stepney, London, England[3]. After losing her husband, Frederick in 1910, Letitia (53) lived with children Letitia (27), Mary (18), Margaret "Madge" (16), Alfred (13) and Maud (9) at 15 Eastwood Road, Goodmayes, in the Town of Ilford, Essex, England[4].

On the 26 June 1923 from the Port of London, Margaret (28) and a Nurse, boarded the vessel "Largs Bay", which was bound for the Port Town of Fremantle, in Western Australia, Australia. Her address at the time was at 15 Eastwood Road, Goodmayes, in the Town of Ilford, Essex, England. The ship, with 725 passengers aboard arrived on the 27 July 1923 after a voyage of 36 days[5].

  • [6] MIGRATION. Largs Bay Contingent. New settlers were further augmented yesterday by the arrival of another batch of migrants by the s.s. Largs Bay. In all the vessel was carrying 725 passengers and of that number 470 were receiving Government assistance...[7].

From the Port of Fremantle, Margaret made her way to the Town of Onslow, in the Ashburton District, where, on the 1 November 1926 she got engaged to John Jonathan Hooley. The couple were married on the 26 November 1926 there[8].

The engagement is announced of Mr. John Hooley, one of the owners of Diomenor Station, and one of the best known men about town, to Miss Margaret Gilchrist, until recently on the staff of the Government Hospital[10].

During their marriage, they had four (4) children and in 1930 had settled at Diomenor Station, 30 miles from the Town of Onslow, in the District of Ashburton, Western Australia[11]. On the 20 December 1943, the property underwent a Mortgagee Sale at the Palace Hotel, in the City of Perth, Western Australia. It is not mentioned whether the Hooley family still owned the Station.

  • [12] MORTGAGEE'S SALE. 'DIOMENOR' STATION ONSLOW. On Monday, December 20th, 1943 at 3. p.m. at the Palace Hotel, Perth. Elder, Smith and Co., Limited have been instructed by the Mortgagee to offer by auction the Pastoral property known as 'DIOMENOR' STATION, as above.....[13].

Margaret died, at the age of 89 years old, on the 4 March 1984, in Nedlands, City of Perth, Western Australia, Australia[14]. Her cremation took place around the 6 March 1984 at the Karrakatta Cemetery and Crematorium, Railway Parade, Karrakatta, City of Perth, Western Australia and her ashes taken by "Administrator"[15].
