Biography
John Hooley was born in the Colony of South Australia (1836-1900)
John Jonathan was born on the 30 December 1877 at Portland Estate, Port Adelaide, near the City of Adelaide, in the Colony of South Australia, Australia[1]. He is the son of John Hooley and Annie Emma Shaw. By 1903, the Hooley family were living at Cemetery Road, in Beaconsfield, City of Perth, Western Australia. John, a Gentleman and Emma lived with children Carpenter, John Jonathan and Joseph Robert there. Emma lost her husband John in 1904 but he was still registered on the Electoral Roll of 1906 at at Cemetery Road in Beaconsfield[2]. Now a widow, Emma lived with her sons John Jonathan, a Carpenter and Joseph Robert, also a Carpenter, at May Street, in East Fremantle by 1910[3].
When her sons moved, by 1916, to the Town of Onslow, in the Ashburton District, Western Australia, Annie also went with them. John worked as a Merchant there and Robert as a Storekeeper[4]. Several years after his mother's death, John got engaged to Margaret Gilchrist on the 1 November 1926 in the Town of Onslow, Ashburton District, Western Australia, Australia. The couple were married on the 26 November 1926 there[5].
[6] Onslow News. (From Our Own Correspondent). Onslow, November 1. Engagement. The engagement is announced of Mr. John Hooley, one of the owners of Diomenor Station, and one of the best known men about town, to Miss Margaret Gilchrist, until recently on the staff of the Government Hospital[7].
During their marriage, they had four (4) children and in 1930 had settled at Diomenor Station, 30 miles from the Town of Onslow, in the District of Ashburton, Western Australia[8]. On the 20 December 1943, the property underwent a Mortgagee Sale at the Palace Hotel, in the City of Perth, Western Australia. It is not mentioned whether the Hooley family still owned the Station.
[9] MORTGAGEE'S SALE. 'DIOMENOR' STATION ONSLOW. On Monday, December 20th, 1943 at 3. p.m. at the Palace Hotel, Perth. Elder, Smith and Co., Limited have been instructed by the Mortgagee to offer by auction the Pastoral property known as 'DIOMENOR' STATION, as above.....[10].
John died on the 8 December 1956 in the mining Town of Port Hedland, in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia, Australia at the age of 79[11].
