Biography

William Gilley III was born on April 8, 1805 in Cranberry Isles, Hancock, Province of Maine, now State of Maine. He was the son of William II and Hannah (Lurvey) Gilley.

William married 1st Clarissa Lancaster on December 26, 1830 in Sutton Island, Cranberry Isles, Hancock, Maine. They had three children: Nancy Caroline (b. 1831), Melinda (b. 1833), and William Lancaster (b. 1835). Clarissa passed away on July 15, 1837 in Southwest Harbor, Hancock, Maine.

William married 2nd Phebe H. Douglass on June 16, 1839 in Southwest Harbor, Hancock, Maine. In the 1840 Federal Census, William and family are living in Mount Desert, Hancock County, Maine. His household of five included: 1 male age under 5 years (William Lancaster--from 1st marriage); 1 male age 30-40 (William III--self); 1 female under age 5 years (Charlotte); 1 female age 5-10 (Melinda--from 1st marriage); and 1 female 30-40 (2nd wife Phebe).

William's daughter, Nancy Caroline, child from his 1st marriage, was likely the female (age 5-10), who was enumerated in the 1840 Federal Census in Joseph Lancaster's (her maternal grandfather's) household located on Sutton Island, Cranberry Isles, Hancock, Maine. As per the 1840 Federal Census, Grandfather Joseph's household of 4 included 1 male age 20-30 (likely his son); 1 male age 50-60 (Joseph--self); 1 female age 5-10 (granddaughter Nancy Caroline--she would have been 8 years old); and 1 female age 50-60 (Joseph's wife Nancy L.--Nancy Caroline's maternal grandmother). "Nancy C.' [Caroline] was also enumerated in her grandfather's household in 1850 and listed as such.

Sometime between 1840 and 1850, William III and family removed to Tremont, Hancock County, Maine.

As above noted, in 1850 William and family were living in Tremont, Hancock County, Maine. Per the 1850 Federal Census, they had several children including: Charlotte (age 10); Andrew Jackson (age 8); Clarissa G. [aka Clara] (age 6); Sarah Elizabeth (age 4); and John Harmon (age 2). In the 1860 Federal Census, William's household included daughter Mary M. (age 9); and in 1870 a son named Montriville Clark (age 9).

From his 1st marriage, William's daughter, Melinda (age 17), was also a member of his household in 1850.

William was a cod fisherman.

William died on January 6, 1894. One World Tree among several family trees report the location of William III's death as Caroll City, Caroll County, Iowa. This location may have been in pursuit of Mormonism, which was of interest to the Douglass family, hence his 2nd wife from this Douglass family, of nearby Deer Isle and Isle au Haut, who also made trek to Iowa further westward. Though William reportedly died in Carroll City, he is buried at the Old Burial Ground in Southwest Harbor, Hancock County, Maine.
