Flossie (Gilley) Smith was born in Appalachia, in Tennessee.
Jewell was born in Woodbury, Tennessee, on June 4, 1914, to William Marion Gilley, a farmer, and Elizabeth Prater.[1] Her mother died of tuberculosis when she was only six years old.
She married Roy Wesley Smith, son of William Edward Smith and Maudy Blanton, on December 26, 1929, in Warren County.[2] They lived in Madison, Tennessee, and had six known children, including:[3][4]
1931-2002: Freda, m. 1st Thomas Estes, 1948; m. 2nd Bobbie Mack Estes, 1954
1932-1936: Buford Wayne, died young, after a kick from a cow
1937-2020: Wilma Louise, m. Hon. James Oxendine, <1962
Roy died on November 25, 1994, at the age of 83.[5] Jewell lived another ten years, passing on May 11, 2004.[6] They are buried together with their son, Buford, at Blues Hill Cemetery in Warren County, Tennessee.[7][8]
