Biography

Roy Smith was born in Appalachia, in Tennessee.

Roy was born in McMinnville, Tennessee, in the fall of 1911, to farmer, William Edward Smith and Maudy Blanton.^{[1] [2]} Roy worked as a farmer in his youth, and later moved into pest control, eventually owning his own business.

He married Jewell Gilley, daughter of William Marion Gilley and Elizabeth Prater, on the day after Christmas, 1929.^[3] They lived in Madison, Tennessee, and had 6 children, all daughters except for one son, Buford, who was tragically killed after being kicked by a cow.^{[4] [5] [6]}

Roy passed in 1994 at the age of 83.^[7] Jewell died ten years later.^[8] They are buried together with their son, Buford, in Blues Hill Cemetery in Warren County, Tennessee.^{[9] [10]}
