Biography

Mildred Gilliam (-1798), called “Millie,” unmarried in 1738 when her father made his will, married apparently John Hill who had wife, Mildred, and who appointed “brother-in-law Hinchia Gilliam” an executor of his 1765 will.

Among her children were John and Sarah, for her parents, and Burwell, for her brother. The births of 6 children are in the Albemarle Parish Register.

In 1763 John and Millie Hill sold a tract of land on the north side of Southwestern Swamp to William Malone.

John Hill made his will in Sussex County naming wife, Milley, sons, Burwell and John, and referring to “my six youngest children” without naming them (will dated 13 Jan. 1765 and proved 21 Feb. 1765).

Mildred Hill, who was head of a household of 4 whites and 4 blacks in Sussex County in 1782, survived her husband 30 years, making her will in 1796. Her children were then John Hill, Mary Sturdivant, Sarah Green, Nancy Williams, Elizabeth Spain, Tabitha Webb, Susanna Horn, Lucy Newman, and Rebecca Horn. She mentioned also “heirs of my son Burwell Hill” (will dated 17 Jan. 1796 and proved 4 Aug. 1798). [1]

Mildred, born 1718, would have been 11 years old when daughter Nancy was born in 1729. The same for the supposed father, John. I do not think that Nancy Hill (who married William Cannaday) belongs with these parents.

Gilliam-743 and Gilliam-255 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate. I'm not sure if the mother was Sarah Battle or Sarah Briggs. The Sarah Henry that's wife of John Gilliam is from a DAR record. Mildred (Gilliam) Hill is mentioned in her father will. Mildred's will was dated 27 January 1796 and probated 4 August 1798.
