Biography

Michael Gilligan was born on 28 May 1835 in Jordan Township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Edward Gilligan and Elizabeth English.

In 1850, Michael, age 13, lived with his parents, Edward, age 45, and Elizabeth, age 43, in Jordan Township. He had ten sibliings: Patrick, age 20, and James, age 18, worked as farmers. The other children were: Mary, age 17; Elizabeth, age 15; Martin, age 10; Robert, age 9; Edward, age 7; William, age 5; Joseph, age 1; and Nancy, age 5 months. His father, Edward, and his two older brothers, Patrick, age 20, and James, age 18, were farmers.[1]

In 1860, Michael, age 21, lived with his parents, Edward, age 50, and Elizabeth, age 48. He had nine siblings: Patrick, age, 28, was a farmhand; James, age 26, was a laborer; Michael, Martin, age 20; Robert, age 18; Edward, age 16; and William were farm hands. The post office was Ansonville. The farm, located in Jordan Township, Clearfield County, was valued at $2000 with $1245 in personal property. His siblings Edward, age 16; William, age 15; Joseph, age 12; Nancy, age 10; and John, age 8, attended school.[2]

On 7 Jun 1870 (date of the 1870 census), Michael, age 31, lived with his wife, Belle, age 25, in Jordan Township, Clearfield County. Post office was Ansonville. He was a farmer and his far was worth $1500 with personal property worth $800. They had three children: Mary, age 5; John, age 4; Ordelia, age 2. Thomas and Nancy Ellen (Gilligan) Smith was his neighbor. John amd Catharine (McCambridge) McAlister lived three farms away in the other direction. [3]

On 29 Jun 1880 (date of the 1880 census), Michael, age 44, lived with his wife, Isabell, age 26, in Jordan Township. He was a farmer. They have seven children: Molly, age 15; John, age 13; Orrie, age 12; Clarra, age 10; Franklin, age 8; David, age 2; and Augustin, age 3 months. John and Orrie worked as laborers. Molly, John, Orrie, Clarra, and Franklin attended school. Edward Gilson, age 24, a nephew of Michael Gilligan, lived with them. [He is the son of Michael's sister Mary Ann and her husband, Michael A. Gilson.] He is a laborer. [One of their neighbors is John and Catherine (McCambridge) McAlister.][4]

On 14 Jun 1900 (date of the 1900 census), Michael, age 60 (born May 1850) was widowed. He was a farmer. He owned the farm, mortgage free. Three children lived with him: John, age 34 (born Apr 1866); Ora, age 32 (born Mar 1868); Augustin, age 20 (born Mar 1880). John and Augustin are farm laborers. Ora is a servant. All of them could read, write, and speak English. [Their neighbors were John and Martin McAlister.][5]

On 18 Apr 1910 (date of the 1910 census), Michael, widowed, age 72, was a general farmer in Jordan Township. He owned his farm, mortage free. His parents were from "Irish" Ireland. His daughter, Orie, single, age 40, lived with him. Also, two grandchildren lived with him: Harry, age 16; and Guy, age 13. Harry worked as a laborer on the farm. Everyone in the household spoke English. [Michael and Mary (McAlister) Smith were neighbors.][6]

On 7 Jan 1920 (date of the 1920 census), Michael, age 84, lived in the Irvona Borough, Clearfiled County. [He sold the farm]. He owned his house, mortgage free. His daugher, Ora M., age 50, and grandson, Guy C., age 23, lived with him. Guy worked as a laborer in a brick plant for wages. Everyone in the household could read, write, and speak English. Three boarders lived with them: Vern Rea, age 48, worked as a laborer at the brick plant; John McNamar, age 62, worked as a section hand on the steam road for wages; and Michael Moyer, age 48, worked as a blacksmith in the blacksmith shop for wages.[7]

Michael Gilligan died on 9 Sep 1923 in Irvona, Clearfield County. Pa. He was 88 years, 3 months and 12 days old. He was born in Jordan Township, Clearfield County. His father and mother were Edward and Elizabeth Gilligan, both from Ireland. He was a widow and a retired farmer. The cause of death was "uremic convulsions" and "hemiplegia." The informant was John Gilligan of Irvona, Pa. He was buried in Morgan Land cemetery on 13 Sep 1923.[8]

His wife, Isabella Mary (McKeehan) Gilligan is buried in Fruit Hill Cemetery, Jordan Township[9]
