Rachel Glandon (see research note) was born about 1813 (see research note) in Virginia (see research note) to Jacob Glandon and Martha Hiatt (see research note).
On 14 June 1832, Rachel married Zachariah Henry Bailey Sr. in Grayson County, Virginia[1][2]. Zachariah was born 10 October 1794 in Botetourt County, Virginia to James S. Bailey Sr. and Margaret Stinson (see research notes on Zachariah's profile page). This was Rachel's first marriage, and Zachariah's second marriage. Zachariah's first wife had passed away the prior year[3].
In the 1840 Federal Census, Rachel's husband, Zachariah, lived in Tazewell County, Virginia, next to Rachel's father Jacob Glandon[4]. It is likely that Rachel, and their first four children (Martha, John, Mary, and Zachariah Jr.) were also in Zachariah's household (see early census research note).
In the 1850 Federal Census, Rachel and Zachariah lived in Tazewell County, Virginia[5]. Zachariah's occupation was farmer[6]. Also in the household were eight of their children[6]. Rachel's parents, Jacob and Martha, were living three households away[7].
In the 1860 Federal Census, Rachel and Zachariah lived in McDowell County, Virginia[8]. Zachariah's occupation was farmer[9]. Also in the household were nine of their children[9].
In the 1870 Federal Census, Rachel and Zachariah lived in Elkhorn Township in McDowell County, now part of West Virginia[10]. Zachariah's occupation was farmer[11]. Also in the household were three of their children (John, James, and Cosby), and their grandchild Floyd (his name was actually Cloyd, and he was the son of John Asbury Bailey and John's first wife Sarah Virginia Brunty)[11]. The family of their son, Zachariah Jr. lived next door, including Rachel's father Jacob[12].
Rachel and Zachariah had at least eleven children together:
Rachel was about 80 years old when her husband passed away. Zachariah died on 7 April 1884 in McDowell County, West Virginia[24] (see research note on Zachariah's profile page). Two years after Zachariah's death, Rachel applied for a widow's pension based on Zachariah's military service during the War of 1812. After nearly a year of back-and-forth correspondence, Rachel's application was approved. A research note on Zachariah's profile page provides a summary of the steps taken by Zachariah, and then Rachel, to obtain benefits based on Zachariah's military service.
In the 1900 Federal Census, Rachel lived near Elkhorn, McDowell, West Virginia with her youngest daughter, Cosby[25]. Also in the household were three grandchildren, children of daughter Cosby[26]. Another grandchild (Laura, daughter of Cosby) lived next door with her husband and family[27], and her son James lived nearby[28].
Rachel was cared for by her son James for the last four years of her life in Maybeury, McDowell, West Virginia[29]. She was about 88 years old when she passed away on 29 August 1902[29]. It is assumed that she is buried in Franklin Cemetery located in McDowell County, West Virginia[30].

First Name
Across the sources used for this profile, there are only a few minor spelling variations for her first name:
Thus far, no record for Rachel includes a middle name for her. It is currently assumed that she had no middle name.
Birth Date
The sources used for this profile provide only estimates for her birth year. The 1900 census provides a birth month and year. Her Find-a-Grave profile provides a specific birth date, but provides no source or grave marker photo in support of that specific birth date.
Birth on 20 Sep 1813 (unsourced, from Find-a-Grave profile)[30]
Rachel was born in either Virginia or North Carolina. Most sources indicate Virginia. Her Find-a-Grave profile indicates that she was born in North Carolina, but provides no source in support of that location.

Parents of Rachel Glandon
A record that explicitly supports Jacob Glandon and Martha Hiatt as the parents of Rachel Glandon has yet to be located. Instead we are relying on the following records as indirect support for this relationship:
One image within Rachel's application for a widow's pension notes that Zachariah and Rachel were married in the home of Jacob Glandon.
Zachariah and Rachel lived next to, or very near to, Jacob and Martha in the 1840[4] and 1850[6] Federal Censuses.
In the 1870 Federal Census, Jacob lived in the household of Zachariah and Rachel's son Zachariah Jr.[12], right next door to Zachariah and Rachel[11].
Analysis of Zachariah within Early Census Records (1790 - 1840)
Rachel's husband, Zachariah Bailey, was mapped through multiple early census records. This analysis starts with a proposed list of family members (spouses obtained from marriage records, children obtained from 1850 and 1860 United States censuses), and then adds assumptions (e.g. whether or not someone was present in the household in that census year, or in what age group an individual was counted, etc.) to that list in order to achieve the counts of family members, by age group and gender, noted in each census. Over the early census years (1790 - 1840), it is likely that Zachariah appeared in two households:
Zachariah was likely in his father's household in 1790, 1800, and 1810. Candidate census records for Zachariah's father in these years have not yet been located.
Google Sheet for household of Zachariah Bailey. Zachariah's military service started and ended at the courthouse for Grayson County, Virginia in 1815. Zachariah also married his first wife (Hester Amburn) in Grayson County, Virginia in 1821. It seems logical that he would be found in Grayson County, Virginia in the 1820 Federal Census. After his marriage to Hester in 1821, they started a family and can be found in Grayson County in the 1830 Federal Census. When Hester passed away in 1831, Zacheriah married again and then moved to Tazewell County, Virginia. His new father-in-law was enumerated next to him in Tazewell County in the 1840 Federal Census. Only a few very minor assumptions must be made in order to fit Zachariah's family to these 1820, 1830 and 1840 Federal Census records.
1880 Federal Census
Rachel has not yet been located in the 1880 Federal Census. Her husband, Zachariah, was living in the household of their son, James, and the census indicated that he was a widow[33].
