John was the second born son of Walter Goddard and also the second living son of that name. The profile of his older brother John can be found here.
In the Goddard Pedigree in the Visitation of Wiltshire in 1565 it stated that John Goddard of Upham, Wiltshire, gent, second son of Walter, married Elizabeth, daughter of William Berenger of Mannyngford, Wiltshire, and by her had issue, - John, his eldest son and heir; Thomas, second son; Thomas third son; John fourth son; Ann, married to Thomas Henton of Egleskott, Wiltshire; and Jane married to Richard Henton of Burton, Berkshire[1].
In 1530 John of Aldbourne acquired the manor of Cliffe Pypard, Wiltshire. The conveyance took place of 26 April 1530. [2] In 1541, his Cliffe Pypard interests extended to include the tithes and presentation of the vicarage at Cliffe. [3]
In the 1539 North Wiltshire Muster, Sir John Goddard, gent of Aldbourne was required to provide "three harness". [4]
John Goddard had his will drawn up on 29 Aug 1556. He described himself as John Godard, the elder, gent of Aldbourne; his older brother John having died many years previously in 1501. In his will he mentioned a deed dated 8 July 1538, between himself and Anthony Hungerford concerning the marriage of his eldest son and heir John and Elizabeth Fettiplace. [5] He made bequests to:
His will was probated by Thomas Goddard the younger on 4 Feb 1557/58. [6]
Rose Goddard has been disconnected from this family in the absence of any evidence that she was their daughter.
