Nicolas GODÉ (~1583 - 1657)[1][2][3][4][5] [Carpin #74][6][7]

Nicolas Godé was born in France about 1583 and was a native of Igé's Saint-Martin parish in Sées diocese and ancient Perche province.[1][2][3][4][5]

A master carpenter by trade, he married Françoise Gadois, sister of Pierre Gadois, in France around 1620.[1][8][9]

Nicolas Godé figures in a document notarized on Sunday, August 7, 1633, in which Sébastien Dodier, a future emigrant to Canada, is also mentioned.[8]

He emigrated to Canada, with evidently excellent credentials,[10] in 1641 with his wife Françoise and four of their children, all born in St-Martin-d'Igé: François, Nicolas, Mathurine and Françoise.[11][12][13] He is mentioned in Canada for the first time later in the year.[1] The family was thus joining Pierre Gadois's family who had emigrated to Canada in 1636.[11] Nicolas Godé's family was part of a group of about forty Montréalistes (Montrealers) sailing on three ships (two leaving from La Rochelle travelling with Maisonneuve, Jeanne Mance and the Gadois family, one leaving from Dieppe) who, having arrived at Québec in late August, [14] travelled with Paul de Chomedey, Sieur de Maisonneuve in 1642 for the founding of Ville-Marie on Montréal island.[14][15]

He was assassinated with his son-in-law Jean Sainct-Père and his valet Jacques Nail (or Noël) by the Iroquois while roofing his house at pointe St-Charles near Montréal.[16]

He was buried on the same day of his assasination.[17]

His wife Françoise died thirty-two years later on Christmas Eve 1689 at Pointe-aux-Trembles near Montréal.[19]

He had 292 descendants in 1729.[20]

[. . .Nicolas Godé . . .], "his son-in-law Jean Sainct-Père a man known for his righteous character and sound judgment as we've seen herein, together with their servant, Jacques Nail (or Noël) , were cruelly shot to death by Iroquois traitors while roofing their home."
    b) citing in another Le Journal des Jésuites entry
"rifle assassination of three Montreal Frenchmen is said to be done by a few Onneïotchoronnons Iroquois, neighbors from Onnontaghe, who then scalped the deceased to bring as trophies to their own country."
    c) paraphrasing from historian Taillon
Some Iroquois came to the home Nicolas Godé was constructing for himself, helped by his son-in-law Jean Saint-Père and Jacques Nail. The three men graciously welcome a few Iroquois and feed them. Upon resuming the roofing of the home, the Indians shot them all and tore off the scalps of Nicolas Godé and Jacques Nail, and decapitated the head of Jean Saint-Père "to preserve and take away his beautiful hair.

Merging into Godé-8. Biography already merged.
posted by George Blanchard
Greetings Lisa!

I've entered biographies with documentation into the profiles of the entire family of Nicolas Godé and Françoise Gadois. Could I please be allowed to be a profile co-manager of the entire family, so I can merge away redundant profiles?

Also, Are there any other profiles you manage that you would like to collaborate on? I have documentation on a significant number of them.

My best wishes to you for a good day. __George

Thank you Denis. The profiles ought to be merged.

I contacted the profile manager of the lower number profile to see if she wants to perform the merge herself.
