Biography

Lionel was the son of John Goodrick[1] and Anne Dymoke. His birth date is not known; he may have been born at East Kirkby, Lincolnshire where his father had his main home.[2][3]

Lionel married three times. His first wife was Bridget Jermyn, daughter of Thomas Jermyn of Suffolk[1] and Anne Spring. Their marriage date and place are not known. No children are known.[2][3][4]

Lionel's second wife (whose first name is unknown) being daughter of Nicholas Robinson of Boston, Lincolnshire.[2][3] The date of their marriage is not known. (Maddison's Lincolnshire Pedigrees names her as Lionel's third wife,[1] but this is a mistake.)

Before 1553 Lionel married his third wife, Winifred Sapcote, daughter of Henry Sapcote and Jane Smith.[1][2][3][5] They had three children:

  • Edward,[1] said to be young and son of Winifred in his father's Inquisition Post Mortem[6]
  • Richard[1]

* Anne, who married Benjamin Bolles[1] and William Jessop[2][3][7][8]

Lionel was Steward of Hatfield, Hertfordshire.[2][3]

Lionel died on 29 August 1561. His Will, dated 15 December 1560,[4] was proved on 25 October 1561.[2][3] In it he:[4][6]

  • appointed his relative Richard Goodrick of London guardian of his children Edward and Anne: his other son Richard may have died in childhood as no provision is made for him
  • left property at East Kirkby, Lincolnshire to his wife Winifred
  • left money to his daughter Anne on her marriage or when she reached the age of 20

His Inquisition Post Mortem gives his place of death as East Kirkby, Licoolnshire; says his wife Winifred survived him; his young son Edward was found to be his heir.[6]

His wife survived him, going on to marry Humphrey Littlebury.[2][3][5]

Research Notes

Mother of Known Children

Douglas Richardson states that Lionel's children Edward, Richard and Anne were born of his second marriage, to a daughter of Nicholas Robinson.[2][3] The source for this is not clear, and it is akmnost certainly a slip caused by Maddison's Lincolnshire Pedigrees naming Winifred Sapcote as Lionel's 2nd rather than his third wife.[1]
